Ho Chi Minh City... Vietnamese for "One hundred billion motorbike" city Keiko’s friend Ky picked us up from the airport and took us to our hotel. Keiko’s first experience of Vietnam was like most people’s… the traffic and the millions of motor scooters! Ky told us that Vietnam does not have a ‘walking culture’ therefore everyone gets around even the shortest distances by car if they are rich, by taxi or motorbike. Like Chris had seen in Hanoi before, whole families can be transported on a bike, so can animals, boxes, construction material and 50 inch plasma TV’s! In this part of the world a two lane road can easily accommodate 6 cars, 34 motorbikes, 7 bicycles and 2 freaked out chooks across it. It took 45 minutes to drive the 8km from the airport to ... read more

Hi, I know it’s a bit late right now to start with this travelling blog, but better late then never i always say, so I just start right now. At the moment I’m sitting in a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to the beach of Vung Tau and I just decided to write this blog, but my journey to Vietnam started a few days ago, so I’ll just start at the beginning. On the 30th December 2010 I left with my mom from my little village in Holland to the airport near Amsterdam. Around 11:40 the plane left and our journey had begun. The flight was quite comfortable, but still awfully long, it’s still 12 hours of flight. But I met a really nice Irish girl, who lives in Australia, in the plane and we ... read more

Xin Chao everyone! We safely arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), this time by the luxury of air and even with no visa hassles – thumbs up all around! One of the first things we did was to withdraw some cash out of the ATM, it was a nice feeling to withdraw 5 million from your bank account (even if it was only in Vietnamese dong!). We jumped in a taxi and made our way to Kate’s flat which was a small village called An Phu (District 2) just a short taxi ride away from District 1 (the city centre). We couldn’t wait to soak up some home luxuries for a week or so whilst at Kate’s. Saigon is a big bustling city that is getting more modern every day, swamped by motorbikes going in ... read more

Today is my 5th day in Ho Chi Min city.I have decided to try this dedicated Travelblog for sharing of my own experience all related travels in this world. This is teh second time that I took my family (children who are free) to follow us for a holiday. HCMC is pretty safe. The hotel I am staying although only rated 3 star is well maintained and clean. The city is also clean. The only main problem is communication. Many people in the street do not understand English so it is a problem. First tips I would like to share is about getting best exhange rate to convert to VD.You can get the best deal from any goldsmitch/jewellary shop.At the airport arrival counter I got 1 USD for 19500 VD.But at in town I got 21000 VD. ... read more

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City at peak hour and the first thing you notice are the streets are overrun by motorcycles merging in every different direction and ceaseless horns honking. Although we’ve travelled quite a bit, at first glance, Vietnam can give you quite a shock. The craziness of the streets is nothing like I’ve ever seen before. However, once you settle into the place in a few hours, you realise that the Vietnamese are friendly people and you never feel unsafe. Although you’re always going to get someone marketing to you or trying to sell something, they’ll always do it with a smile. We didn't do much the first night in Hoi Chi Minh City as we were tired from our long day in Singapore and all the travelling. It was about 7pm ... read more

Nov 19th Saigon So, we are back in Saigon after two days in Can Tho. All I can really say about Can Tho ( and Hue) is that they are dirty, rat infested cities. Wouldn't recommend either to anybody. The other places have been quite nice though. I would return to both Hanoi and Hoi An in a flash. I suspect that some of the beach communities would nice also, but unfortunately the weather is not cooperating. Yesterday in Can Tho we had a major thunder and lightening storm which dumped massive amounts of water. Today when we arrived in Saigon we were met with another deluge of water, flooding everything in sight. At least when we arrived here at our hotel, it had not yet rained, until we decided to head out for a bite ... read more

A spell of bad weather can start to feel like a virus that you carry from place to place. First rain, then floods, then more rain followed me from Hanoi all the way down to Nha Trang on the central coast. For a week I never felt really, truly dry. I'm inclined to believe that my bad luck charm came in the form of a bespectacled American who, when I asked where he was from, replied "Oh, nowhere really." Oh, I thought, one of those. He's a traveler. (When I pressed him further he finally admitted that he was from Pennsylvania and had a house in Las Vegas of all places) "I just travel. Been traveling for 2 years now." He said this in a kind of nonchalant way that was almost a challenge--as if he ... read more

Hello All, Hope everyone's well, all good here. Just a quick one today, it's sunday again and I'm watching the grand prix, lucy's reading in the other room. Since our last blog, we've been to Hanoi for the weekend. We were supposed to spend a day with my Dad and Lynda who are now en-route to Saigon (arriving tomorrow morning!), but their flight was delayed and they missed their connection in Hong Kong. All of which meant that in the end, we only had 3 hours with them but it was a very nice 3 hours spent introducing them to Vietnamese cuisine at a very nice restaurant. Hanoi's a lovely place, crazy traffic even compared to Saigon. We did all the sights in the city and spent some nice time wandering through the back streets of ... read more
