THERE’S A SOLDIER IN A HUT…… With a bullet up his butt, Take it out, Take it out, Like a good boy scout. We were all given a month’s leave at home before reporting to Oakland Army Base for processing to overseas duty. For some of us it would be the last time we ever saw our families. During that month the siege at Khe Sahn took a lively turn, the embassy in Saigon was assaulted and nearly overrun, heavy fighting broke out in the streets of Hue. The 1968 TET Offensive had fetched loose in a big way much to the surprise and chagrin of our war leaders who had been bragging that the war was about over. Thobe and I would be right in the middle of it. My folks drove us up to ... read more

SPOOKY The best Vietnam movie remains the first one made, it starred John Wayne and is called “The Green Berets”. The real star of that show is not John Wayne though. It is an AC-47 gunship that they called Puff the Magic Dragon. Fifty-three AC-47 gunships came into service during the Vietnam War and all of them collectively were called Puff. 18 & 19 February 2013 - This is Part 3 of my 6-day solo trip in southern Vietnam by local bus and motorbike. Biên Hòa is the capital city of Đồng Nai province. It is located 60km from Sài Gòn. There are some industrial parks in this province and many northern Vietnamese work there. I have passed by this province several times before but never really visited it. The bus ride from Sài Gòn (Bến xe miền Tây bus station) to Biên Hóa (Bus No. 601) takes two hours although the distance is only 60km. A bus ... read more

Finally energised and tan enough to leave Mui Ne, our last (luxurious) hotel had given us a gift, Ut Nyugen, the lovely manager at Paris Mui Ne de Plage and a tour guide, originally from the Mekong Delta. He offered to help us plan our route and did he ever! He even made us maps, which we followed the whole way. It was so unexpected and so generous... So, he was right, even though we couldn't believe it, and the 200km to Bien Hoa only took us about 5 hours, inlcuding lunch! Having found a nice place to sleep, we thought our night would be rather uneventful. But coming back from dinner, we discovered that the nice English-speaking Vietnamese couple who helped us find a place to have dinner were not only a famous recording artist ... read more
