Yay! The beach here is great, the hotel (Swis-belhotel Golden Sands Resort) is awesome - we've been to a lot of hotels and this is the biggest pool I have ever seen in my life!!! and the town is cool! This is the perfect place to hang for 5 nights!
It's warmer again here but still not hot enough to swim damnit - might try the sea later as it's got to be warmer than the pool ;-) Ok, correction - as at 7th Feb it was hot enough to get in that cool pool and even while away a few hours at one of the sunken pool bars, burning our backs to a lobster red the whole while....
We went into town the first day we were here, the free shuttle runs from the hotel about 6 times a day, its so quaint! It's based along a river and there are restaurants everywhere! And its soooo cheap!!! They are all in such competition everywhere that they are all trying to have the cheapest beer and most places now the local beer is 3,000 Dong a glass..... yup, 30cents!!!! The restaurants all have the standard Vietnamese girls outside trying
OK, this is one third of the pool!
... we just can't fit the rest in! ;-) to wave tourists in cat calling all the while, our fave being "you outside, come inside now!" and "buy..... something....anything" ;-)
There's free wireless in our room and a desk so we have our laptop on and it's really easy to get and write everyone emails - yes! I know you're all excited! ;-) Although, we've asked the reception and double checked with the reception that wireless is free as it feels to easy to be true and they all keep telling us no internet in Hoi An at moment, it's down.......... Riiiiiiiiiight.......... ;-)
We're gutted we still don't have any photos, we have to get a new digital camera but we dont trust the street vendors for a legit one so we are going to have to get a budget old disposable camera until we get to Bangkok or Hong Kong airport and can get one in duty free before we reach Africa. But it means no uploading of digital pics until Africa! Gutted, at least we'll have some budget pics of our time here.
If we were only on a short holiday or had heaps of room in our bags, this would be the place
to shop! There's definitely heaps of cool clothes here and heaps different from ones we've seen elsewhere. We would have bought heaps here and got things made but the lighter our bags the better considering we're only at the very start of our year long holiday!
On about the 3rd night here, we were having an early dinner at one of the little restaurants in town, we sat right out front and watched the world go by, including the nominated girl at our place trying to get more tourists into the restaurant the whole time. Suddenly, our girl started yelling something at the girl at the restaurant next door. We couldn't really make out if they were friends or enemies since of course it was all in vietnamese and everytime we looked at our girl she would stop yelling for a second, give us a big grin then go straight back to yelling at this girl next door. Another few tourists walked past and they were both yelling at them to come in, then suddenly, our girl takes off HER SHOE and goes sprinting to this other girl, trying to bash her over the head with it! Well, if the floor had been a little cleaner martin and i would have been rolling all over it in fits of laughter! It was so freaken funny! This little old lady comes tottering out of our restaurant after the girl, trying to hold her back and a guy from the other restaurant is trying to old his girl back while ours tries to bash her with her shoe! It was soooo funny! Finally the other girl took off on her scooter and our girl came back grinning her head off, obviously victorious. We noticed with humour that the incident didnt seem to surprise the staff at our restaurant too much! Obviously there was some sort of system in place over who could call the tourists first, something to do with what direction they came in, what angle they came from, for all we know, their shoe size! It was just very funny! Oh yeah, and their maths was terrific also, we calculated our bill for entres, mains, deserts and several cocktails each to come out about 280,000 dong ($28NZD).... but the bill arrived for 120,000 dong ($12NZD) so we paid up as quickly as possible and ran! ;-) Ah yes, fond memories of Hoi An ;-)
