Thursday 25th January 2018 A very early start today as we set off at 3am for the short taxi ride to Yangon airport and with no traffic around the journey takes less than five minutes. Today we head to Vietnam with Bangkok Airways. First leg Yangon to Bangkok and then a short stopover before our flight to Da Nang. We are returning to Vietnam a country we visited 2 years ago. Whilst we were there we fell in love with beautiful Hoi An, an old town with a french influence, great vibe and lovely beaches close by. We felt this was an ideal place to chill a while following our hectic time in Myanmar plus we will try and explore a little more of this beautiful area. Yangon Airport was vitually deserted as we arrived - ... read more

When last we left you, which makes the bold assumption someone is actually reading this drivel, our intrepid travellers were just departing Halong Bay by coach returning to Hanoi and then onto Danang and Hoi An. Agreed, intrepid travellers is a bit over the top for this particular trio, but then so is referring to a bus as a coach as tour operators seem to be prone too. Our bus was a little late out of Halong Bay, or rather the marina there. It's a bit of a zoo actually, although these tenders coming to the docks and sea wall from the bigger boats and disgorging score after score of tourists for the return to Hanoi. It all takes a bit of time to move a swarm of people through a small terminus and onto a ... read more

And on to Vietnam. Pete came here in 1991 and needed a guide (Binh) to take him around. He kept in touch with Binh, and when we went to Vietnam in 2006, we contacted him. Binh and his wife (Lan), who live in Saigon, planned a trip for us around Vietnam and accompanied us on our trip, for two and a half weeks, with a car and driver. We saw so much of the country then, that we decided we only wanted to focus on a few things on this trip. One area we liked and wanted to return to is Hoi An (not to be confused with Hanoi, the capital). We flew here from Vientiane (Laos) and stayed at a really nice hotel. After sweltering in Thailand and Laos for about a month, we knew ... read more

We flew from Ho Chi Min to Da Nang and then our bus took us to Hoi An . After some confusion at the hotel where we found there was no pool available , it was being renovated .. our travel company soon arranged for us to go to another hotel . It was lovely modern and bright with a gorgeous pool area and pretty gardens ..so we were very happy with the swap. Leaving bags in the lobby we set off to explore the town ..about 20minute Walk ... and on the way we were introduced to the laundry lady at number 163 ...which looked like the front of a garage for fixing scooters ( it was ) . This was our second week and by now things were getting a bit grubby so we ... read more

This was our first attempt at hitchhiking in Vietnam and we'd not been stood for 5 minutes on the road before another couple told us they had tried and it was a hopeless venture. It took them 4 hours last time to get one lift. 10 minutes later we got a lift with a helpful trucker and took great pleasure in waving to them out of the window as we zoomed by! This guy took us two thirds of the way and once again no sooner had we got out we hailed another lad who took us pretty much the rest of the way. We'd arranged to meet up with a Vietnamese friend we'd met in Laos (Tano) and stayed at his families air bnb - it was plush! Da nang itself was very modern and ... read more

Leaving the airport in Hue agreed a price with a taxi driver for him to then get pulled over leaving the airport by security to check his paperwork ended up sitting in the taxi for 15 minutes waiting so when he got back in the car i gave him a new price and said it was a waiting fee he didn't argue. The hostel i arrived at was very nice and friendly the girl that greeted me even carried my case up the stairs saying she had muscles. Once i was settled in i went for a nice walk down the river to soak up the sunshine its amazing what difference a bit of sunlight can do to your mood. I found a nice little spot along the river to sit and watch the world go ... read more

I had been warned not to have breakfast at the hotel because it was not included in the price and was also not so good. While waiting for G&V to come down from their room - I retrieved my insulin from the hotel fridge. Hearing what sounded like a soft cackle coming from near a sink - I saw a caged chook under the drain pipe from the sink and over a trap. Looks like the house chook is also the "garbage disposal" and eats any of the food scraps that come down the drain pipe. I guess that's OK until you are fat enough to look like a good meal and become part of "com ga". We went a few meters to the next corner where we had Ca phe Saigon (frothed-up" black VN coffee ... read more

So I’m sitting in the Quy Nhon train station, which is actually in Dieu Tri, when I spot a familiar logo on a new or freshly pressed T-shirt. I don’t think the older man sitting across the way from me really understood my interest, but he politely allowed me to take these photos. Bunker, would you please notify the Ford dealer?... read more

Hoi An is a nice little place, very colourful with interestsg markets and river sides, but ferocious mossies. I have been putting up a good defence, but they launched a consorted attack last night, with my only defence being the elastic at the bottom of my trousers, so I now have a nice band of bites round the ankles. I am still puzzling over the traffic rules here, if there are any? Pavements are obviously for motorcycles to park on, forcing pedestrians to walk in the road and avoid the thousands of bikes not yet parked and heading for them. Been told by our guide that I must not run to avoid them, walk slowly, don't look at them, and they will avoid you, run, and they don't know what to do and will hit you! ... read more
