In July 2017, I travelled with my family back to my father's home town in Central Vietnam. During our week trip, my sister and I took this opportunity to visit another beach city further south which is Quy Nhơn. We spent two days in this city and everyone had a great time. It was my second visit to Quy Nhơn. On my first trip in 2010, I was sponsored by a Vietnamese organisation based in the US (Viettelco). I spent a day in the city and rented a taxi to go towards the countryside as I wanted to see the old Chàm brick towers of the Champa Kingdom. These towers were built during the 11th to the 13th century, and they are scattered around the countryside (about 40km away from the city). On this trip I ... read more

A long day starting at 7 am with a 6 hr bus trip to cover some 300 kms through the central part of Vietnam with a planned afternoon 60 km ride to our overnight stay at the Seagull Hotel in the coastal city of Quy Nhom. However the weather gods turned against us. While the whole country seems awash with water today was our first wet riding day with heavy showers all day. I would never consider riding in such conditions at home but off we set with our $0.50 plastic poncho's riding in potholed & flooded roads. By 22 kms with a winter night setting in early under grey sky's we came to a soon to be impassable section of flooded road & we obviously needed to turn back. Despite the rain it was still ... read more

We're only staying in Quy Nhon one night even though we promised ourselves we would stay two nights minimum for the kids sake. Some how we lost the key to our room. Stressful at first but funny in the end as everyone was to blame. The hardest part was trying to explain we lost the key to reception. After trying to explain in English along with my best sign language, a thought popped in to my head. What about google translate? I typed it in and converted my question from English to Vietnamese. Viola, it worked. So from then on every question we could think of in advance we asked google translate then took a screen shot so we could use it later when I didn't have internet connection. See photos for some of our questions. ... read more

Ooo early start this morning to catch the 5:30 bus to Quy Nhon which sounds like "wee'd on" when locals say it. We woke the kids up and rolled them into a taxi before first light. We hopped onto a 24 seater bus (which the lady that booked the tickets tried to talk me out of) and were shouted at to take the raised back seat (a little nervous making with 2 small kids). Our drivers attitude to braking, swerving and generally bullying other road users off the road added to the tension but I've perfected the art of holding two babies. The drive was really interesting through rice paddies, banana plantations, mountains and small towns. There was plenty of interesting sights from drying rice and rice paper to herding ducks. There was also a large ... read more

We were on the train heading to Quy Nhon. The train left Nha Trang at 3:30 AM. We managed a few hours of sleep before heading to the train station. Outside the front doors a group of taxi drivers watched a European soccer game on a TV which was perched atop a food cart. The station personnel were asleep on little cots behind the ticket counter. The fare to Quy Nhon was $7.50 each for the 5-hour ride. Once aboard, Karen and Karlie caught some sleep while I stared at my reflection in the train's window. It was pitch black outside as the dimly lit train chugged northward, leaning hard into the South China Sea. I turned on my MP3 and lay back. The tip of my nose grazing against cool window glass with the swaying ... read more

Auch ganz gut waren jeweils ... read more

It is time to descend the highlands and return to the coast. But first the inevitable transportation adventure. From Da Lat I take a bus to Nha Trang, an ocean side town about 11 hours north of Saigon. The road is windy, swithcbacks most the way. My seat companion rolls and stuffs orange peels up her nose which I admit I find odd. I also take offense because it's one thing to know you smell but entirely another to have someone else point it out in such an odd manner. But by hour two I realized that my companion's world does not revolve around me and my attempts at hygiene because I understood as another woman threw up for the third time that citrus must counteract car sickness in some way. Note to self: must learn ... read more

So myself and Vinny left Hoi An at the ungodly hour of 6am, when all of Vietnam seemed to be out and about! Vinny got his vietnamese breakfast roll while I naively thought that the bus would make stops along the way as it was a five hour bus journey to Quy Nhon, a fishing town on the coast half way between Hoi An and Nha Trang. No such luck, we were bet onto a small minibus and off we went for probably the strangest bus journey I've been on (so far!). First of all, the horn on the bus was broken and as anyone who has been to Asia will know, the horn is as important for navigating the roads as the steering wheel! But that didn’t stop them, as one guy was given the ... read more

Quy Nhon beach is a 4-mile long crescent of fine amber-colored sand. The harbor is sheltered by a bowl of green mountains. On their slopes you can see faint dimples that were created by the 2,000 lb bombs dropped by B-52s during the Vietnam War in this strategically important area. The now calm waters are laced with fish nets, traps, squid shacks and round rattan boats piloted by small, sinewy, sun-darkened men. They control their craft with a single wooden paddle held at the front of the pitch-sealed bamboo bowl. By using a series of complex, wrist twists they navigate across the water at will. Fifty-foot square dip nets in the north end of the bay are controlled with a series of rope and levers housed in little pup-tent control rooms that stand on stilts. A ... read more

Suzanne here... On to another beach town, but Quy Nhon has none of the facilities or tourist trappings of Nha Trang. Surprising really as there is a large stretch of sandy beach. Still, we were ready for something a bit more 'local' and less touristy. Budget hotels were few and far between, so we decided to splurge. We chose the 4* Saigon Quynhon. At £30 it was about three times what we'd usually pay. Might sound cheap to those back in England, but we're on a budget. Still, we decided it was worth it on this occasion. The hotel was not the most luxurious we've ever stayed in, but certainly one of the best on this trip (not counting the Saigon apartments of course). The room was large, modern and clean, and had sea view. It ... read more
