Day 2 - Hanoi Up at 6am to join the locals in the park near the lake doing exercise. They were very welcoming and showed us the moves. We both joined in with dancing and light aerobics. Back for breakfast bread and cheese. Booked our Halong Bay trip yesterday. We booked economy. The poor woman was distraught and said we looked like people who should book the luxury! I asked why she said because we were well dresses and had our nails polished! Note to self: don't go back packing with nail varnish on .... it's melting off! Talked to some of the students in the hotel most on gap years, some thinking of teaching out here. A guy we were talking to yesterday told us he had been teaching out here for 4 years and ... read more

Day 2 - more of Hanoi We had an early start this morning so that we could enjoy taking part in the very social Hoan Kiem Lake exercising set! I did this previously on my last stay here. It is such a phenomena, that I felt the need to revisit it! I think that all of the people who live here go down to the lake for early morning exercise. It is an amazing sight. You see many pockets of people doing badminton, tai chi, aerobics, dancing, walking, running and jogging, First, I joined a cha-cha and rumba class. The ladies there where great, giving me instruction, whilst laughing! Then we both joined a sort of aerobics class. We both got right into it, sweating buckets at the end. We returned to the hotel for breakfast ... read more

Day 1 - The journey out Well, with a 3am start, and bad nights sleep, I was quite dopey to start with this morning, but I did manage to finish the washing off before I left! Bonus! The journey over to Manchester didn't go without its hiccups though. First of all, we got as far as Gilberdyke when I realised that I had left my glasses behind! Not good! I can't see much without them. Claire had the patience of a saint, as she offered to return home to get them. I had considered not bothering but me with no glasses for eight weeks would have been very difficult! We then hit about three sets of traffic diversions, which Claire handled with ease .... With the help of our faithful friend.... The sat nav! We had ... read more

Our train arrived in Hanoi at about 0430 and we caught a taxi to our hotel. Once there, we waited in the very luxurious lobby of the Luxury Golden Lotus Hotel as we were told that check in time wasn't until 1400. We've been in Vietnam long enough to know that they will bend over backwards to get you in earlier. So we only had to wait an hour and we were in. As the name suggests, it was one step up from the regular Golden Lotus Hotel. The rooms were more luxurious, spacious, with windows of which one has a view over the city. We took some time to regroup and round up our gross, smelly trekking clothes to take to the laundry. I have a mutiny on my hands. Brendan has given up the ... read more

The only plans we had for our last day in Vietnam was to head to the airport in the early afternoon. We took advantage of no plans and slept in for the first time since we started the trip. But as it was our last day, Kirsten decided to head out for a pedicure, while Chester and Lynn relaxed at the hotel and had a few beers. Surprisingly all of the spas were full and Kirsten had to scurry to 3 of them before she could get it. But she made it back to the hotel with 45 mins to spare to get packed up and showered. Our guide met us for the ride to the airport with a few last questions "just for fun" for us. Of course we did not get a single question ... read more

We were kind of hoping to sleep in one of the days, but it wasn’t today. Lynn was up early for 6:15 Tai Chi on the deck. Kirsten and Chester stayed in the room sleeping. At 7:45 we got a call from the crew because they were worried that we hadn’t been up for a light breakfast yet. they are determined to make sure we get fatter. So we dragged ourselves up to the dining room for a very light breakfast of fruit and muffins. Today’s excursion was to a floating village in the Bay. One could kayak or take a small row boat paddled by a local to view the village. Lynn took to the row boat and Kirsten and Chester kayaked. Of course Kirsten and Chester didn’t even make it to the village, they ... read more

It was another early morning and travel day. Today we headed to Ha Long Bay. It was a four hour drive from Hanoi to the Bay. Of course the trip didn’t need to take four hours. We drove for about 90 minutes and then had a 30 minute rest stop to hit the restroom and stop at a gift shop. The driver definitely needs the break though. Driving in Hanoi is like a full contact sport, and this driver was amazing. He was dodging cars, motor bikes, bicycles, and semi-trucks like the game Frogger. Instead of crossing the street, he was weaving in and out of traffic on both sides of the road. One of the main differences between the U.S. and Vietnam is that we drive on the right, and here they drive on both ... read more
