In march 2019, we went with a family on a trip to Vietnam. Our group consisted of me, a spouse, a son of 5 years and my mom. We chose the flight from Moscow to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) by Aeroflot. We decided to make our way from south to north along the coast. The first item was Saigon. We arrived early in the morning, the city greeted us with the stifling and humid air, a crowd of people and a furious movement. However, as in most cities of Southeast Asia. Booked in advance the transfer from the hotel, chose a hotel in the tourist center, close to the main attractions. It was called Brilliant Hotel. The hotel is located in a nondescript side street, among other buildings. Very modest hotel. But we are only at ... read more

The longevity of fish I saw a tasty fish. Not one of those who live in a mud pond and taste of mud. I knew it would be more expensive but I wanted a delicious dinner. Well, his head was long gone and another cut had been sold. When she cut the piece I requested the fish started wagging his tail. You could say that the North Vietnamese are, at best, insensitive but the Americans did worse when introducing the electric chair. “Oh, it’s not strong enough. Bring that nigger back and let’s try a few more volts”. British scientists sawed the top off of monkeys’ heads to see if they could get a nobel prize. If I have to choose between Vietnam and the civilized west – here I am.... read more

The Czechs have a charming way of describing someone who is peculiar or off their trolley: “he is special.” The kindest thing I can say about the majority of women in Bac Kan is that they are special. If I want to buy bread at breakfast time, I have to pass three chemists1 and four hairdressers2. One of the main monthly expenses for the Bac Kan household is mum’s hair. As a good old fashioned chauvinist pig I am happy to note that the women take care of their appearance but there is a slightdrawback: they spend all day with their crash helmet on. In banks, offices, restaurants, walking down the street, selling, buying ….. high heels, puffy jackets, cloth smog masks and a crash helmet. img=http://photos.travelblog.org/Photos/264840/828765/s/7911574-ng---i-ph--n--ngu-ng--c-2-0.jpg center ... read more

Animal welfare in Vietnam, not to mention dogs in Slovakia and Spain Next door to my new residence is a centre for the torture of animals. In Britain we have abattoirs which are supposed to be humane. They are humane - humans have nothing to fear because the place is nice and clean and away from public view. But the animals are terrified. I know because I have seen them. In Vietnam, they don’t have so many abattoirs. Why deprive the people of the pleasure of seeing the animals suffer? The living lie bound, next to the dead and the half-dead. They keep their “pet” dogs chained up all day. One possible excuse is the likelihood of the dog being stolen. In Slovakia, more than 10% of the population is “Roma” . There is a 10% likelihood ... read more

It has been exactly one week since I started my 4-day trip to visit 6 provinces in the North East of Vietnam (28 to 31 May 2012). I traveled on a tour as it was very expensive if I rented a car with driver and traveled over 1,000km. There were only 4 tourists on the tour (myself and a family from Sài Gòn), plus tour guide and driver, so there were 6 people in total and we traveled in a 7-seater car. During 4 days of the trip, we saw mountains, rivers, dangerous passes, beautiful waterfall on the Vietnam – China border, lakes, caves, and muddy roads where cars and trucks were stuck for hours, as well as rocks which were fell off from the mountains after the rains before we got there. My 4-day tour ... read more

Arrive Hanoi Friday 25th March after an uneventful flight. ( The taxi to Manchester airport developed a flat tyre. The car did not possess a wheel brace and a Manchester taxi had to summoned to complete the journey arriving nearly 3 hours after leaving Clitheroe and in the nick of time for the flight!) Saturday 26th March. An early breakfast followed by a vehicle transfer of approximately200km to Phu Thong followed by a 32km cycle ride to Ba Be National Park for a 1 night stay. In the Far East you soon become aware of the difference in life style seeing many strange things as you go along. We saw a dead pig strapped to the back of a small motorbike on its way to the market. We arrived at the hotel in the dark and ... read more

26/2/10 - Ba Be National Park is 240km northwest of Hanoi, it takes about 6 hours to drive there along a mixture of highway and then windy back roads. The countryside along the way is hilly and the roads were lined with a lot of school kids on bicycles. The country was dryer than that around Cuc Phuong and there had been a drought in the area over recent times. Many of the towns we passed through were dusty, frontier places. The eatery that we stopped at for lunch had enough Vodka stockpiled in boxes to keep half of Russia happy. Some folks around towns like Bak Kan obviously had big drinking problems. Ba Be actually means Three Lakes and is a very large area of fresh water, surrounded by limestone hills and evergreen forests. The ... read more
