Woken up early by the sounds of something nesting above our room. Sounded like the rat from Pokhara was back for his biscuits, but it was just a bird above the window!. Breakfast is included at the hotel but it was a bit odd. The food was great but the drinks were mad. Beckies lemon juice was hot and sweet and Paul's coffee came in two glasses (one with strong cold coffee and the other with milk) and extra hot water. You can really see the French influences in the bread and pastries - they are really good and very light. Had a lazy couple of days booking hotels in Hoi An and Nah Trang to get the rest of our trip sorted. Have found it takes the stress out if the hotels are booked and ... read more

Matkalla joudutt... read more

It was always going to be a short stop in Hue, given that the time on our Vietnamese Visa is quickly running out. Arrived at 6pm to dump our bags and head out for dinner to a neat little local place where we were able to sample the Hue delacacies such as shrimp 'pancake' wrapped in banana leaves and Pan Lek(?) another type of vegetarian dish. All in all pretty damn tasty. Still a little knackered and needing to catch up on sleep we turned it in early. Only to rise late as well the next morning - our Contiki tour was not off to a good start, but alas we procured a motorbike and we were off to the citadel - the former home of Vietnamese emperors before being handed over to the military and ... read more

Well after spending almost 3 weeks longer than I expected to in Laos, I headed back to Vietnam, but not without one last grueling bus trip. After the typhoon I was keen to get to Vietnam as soon as possible, so I caught a direct bus from Pakse in Laos to Hue in Vietnam, but it was a hell of a trip, the unairconditioned bus was full of Vietnamese men chain smoking, the luggage was piled so high in the aisle that you had to crawl to get out of the bus, and we had a 7 hour wait at the border. After all of that, we were only a couple of kilometres into Vietnam when the bus stopped yet again, and to my surprise the luggage guys got out screwdrivers to open up the airconditioning ... read more

As promised (by the gentleman that had spoken to us on the train before it departed Hanoi), we were collected at the train station and taken to a hotel called the Thai Bingh II. It was modern (as are nearly all the hotels in Hue), was well located and we took a lovely room for ten dollars. It was raining in Hue when we arrived and surprise, surprise we did not venture far on our first day. We only managed to get as far as the "Manadarin" restaurant at the end of the road. It is run by a local photographer, who gives you the opportunity to purchase prints at a very reasonable 20,000 VMD. We had an unimpressive dinner here and started to have a read through the tour literature that was spread about the ... read more

So it has been a little while since I have written... The internet here isnt that good here in Viet Nam. Really slow and half the time I cant get the page up to search for msn.com! Anyways... We went to FB Blaze and FB Bastogne but I think I already told you all about that. So... Mr Chien took us to these caves abuot 100 miles from way. These caves were just like the Carls Bad Caverns except the things inside were huge. The cave was an old hiding spot for the VC during the war because they knew that we couldnt bomb them if they were in there. We did attempt because you can see craters and scars on the rocks from the bombs. Then we walked to the next cave which was 600+ ... read more

Wednesday 13th September 2006 We got up early and headed down to Café on Thu Wheels were we’d organised for a couple of locals to show us a bit more of Hue. Heading off on the back of their mopeds the first stop was Thien Mu Pagoda, which overlooked the river and had spectacular bonsai tree gardens. The temple is famously known for being the home of the monk Thich Quang Duc. In 1963 he drove to Saigon and preceded to burn himself alive in protest of President Ngo Dinh polices. His car is still on show in the gardens behind the Pagoda. From there we sped back through town, then rode around some of the surrounding villages. All villages are linked by networks of rice paddy fields, narrow paths (which are just wide enough for ... read more

Tuesday 12th September 2006 Today were heading to the DMZ, unabbreviated the De-Milerterized Zone. This was the main reason for us stopping off in Hue. The Ben Hai River served as the border between North and South Vietnam during the war and 5km either side of the river was the DMZ. It spread the entire width of Vietnam, from the Loas border to the South China Sea. Ironically, it became one of the most militarized areas ever. It was a few ours north of Hue so we took a tour to check it out. We visited several areas, namely the sight of former Khe Sanh combat base, ‘The Rockpile’ and Dakrong Bridge. We also got to observe, how high up on the mountain tops despite efforts of reforestation, the top of the mountains remain bare of ... read more
