The overnight bus from Ninh Binh was pretty horrible. We were the last to get on the bus and got shoved in the back corner by the toilet with a really nice guy named Triss (could have been Tryst, he was English, maybe... It's hard to keep track of who's from where). After a restless 11 hours we made it to Hue (minus Rebecca's flipflops which got eaten by the bus) and conveniently got dropped off right in the middle of the tourist area. It was about 7:30am, raining and we weren't 100% sure where we wanted to stay so we just let one of the guys (waiting to take people to his hotel) take us to his hotel. The room was okay and we decided to stay – it was still raining and far too ... read more

Day 1 We arrived at the train station for the sleeper to Hue with plenty of time to spare. This enabled us to meet a few fellow passengers and settle into our very simple berth. Or as a travel brochure would describe it: Unspoilt, untouched and a magnificent historical reminder of Vietnam's glorious past. Although it wasn't as bad as some people have described it, it certainly made me feel itchy just thinking about the comments. The journey solidified my love for train travel, although I'm still not a fan of the bathroom situation. Arriving in Hue at 8 am, it was quite humid. Weather forecasts for this area have predicted rain for the next week, so I'm feeling cranky just thinking about how hot and sticky it will be. Luckily this hotel has a pool, ... read more

Mr Hue picks me up at a sprightly 8am for my motorbike trip from Hue to Hoian. I 've been deliberating whether or not to do it – it costs $63 which is well out of my budget and the local bus only costs $5 to get there in half an hour. Having said that this may be the last part of proper travel I do in Vietnam and as motorbikes seem like they outnumber people 2:1 in this country – what better way to see the country??? The scenic route will stop at blue lagoons, waterfalls, wind up a mountain path, beaches and tomorrow take in the Cham ruins at My Son. Plus - I'm happy to pay a little more for a driver i trust with a good bike as I have an exceptionally ... read more

I transfer back to Hanoi and then its another nightbus to Hue. I arrive into a town soft and grey with drizzle at 6am in the morning - having been sardined into a slot the size of a baked bean can all night. Because of absolutely no preparation on my part i'm easy prey for a persistent man on a motorbike. Mr Thien gradually persuades me to part with 180,000 (just under a fiver) to take me around the sights of Hue for the day. As he also manages to find me a guesthouse for under 6 dollars a night I don't begrudge it him too much...but on checking in I suddenly realise that although I am now in Central Vietnam - my underwear is still holidaying in North Vietnam. I've managed to leave my laundry ... read more

We have been in Vietnam for almost two weeks and I haven't even given you a full “holy crap I'm in a new country!” report... what a slacker. Well Vietnam has been full of pleasant surprises. Before coming to this country we heard a lot about how unwelcoming the locals can be; luckily we have received only smiles and helpful advice. The locals are generally our main source of information when it comes to food we should try or places we need to visit so their kindness has been greatly appreciated. Some things I have learned since we arrived: the coffee is very strong, I really don't like caves, riding on the back of a moto-taxi isn't as scary as I suspected (and is a very cheap way to get around) and Vietnam is just as ... read more

From the highs of Sapa to the lows of Halong Bay we were now heading into the midlands of Vietnam, Hue (as we found out pronounced Hwey), Hoi An and then further south to Nha Trang. But since leaving Sapa the rains had started. And once it starts raining in Vietnam it takes a long time to stop, in this case 5 days later and 600km further South it did eventually cease. So a note for anyone heading to Vietnam, take a raincoat or even better buy a multicolour poncho like the locals do. And when they are in their hundreds it's quite a sight, a spectrum of colour scattered around the market stalls. Hue, the first of our 3 destinations to come from the outset looked good. It promises culture, pagodas and a big old ... read more

Warning! this gentleman attempted to scam money from my son and I by pretending to be an english/maths teacher. He offered to buy us a drink and chat about Scotland/UK etc. After this he invited us to see his family which we duly did. However it soon become apparent that he was offering to buy items for us for local prices but this turned out to be untrue. The situation could have got ugly but by pretending to return the next day for a tour and shopping spree allowed us to get away. We met him the next day and he was distraught that we no longer wanted his services. https://www.dropbox.com/s/43498v1nmj5dc27/2012-10-15%2015.38.49.jpg https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=217870670864739256207.0004cce8ccbdccc5afda8&msa=0&ll=16.477129,107.587652&spn=0.005093,0.010568... read more

We travelled by train from Hoi An to Hue. It is supposedly one of the world's great train rides - but the haze, smog, dirty windows and fact that we were on the wrong side of the train facing backwards made it a little difficult to work out why. But hey, we weren't at work, and had a packet of Oreo cookies to console us. It was dark in Hue, but the drive from the airport was interesting - much cleaner and some pretty smart street lighting here. Rooms at the Huong Giang Hotel are gorgeous, but staff look at me blankly when I ask if this was once a school. I read a great book recently by Uyen Nicole Duong, called Daughters of the River Huong (the first of an interesting trilogy) talking about her ... read more

We had a great few days in Hanoi. Its an amazing and vibrant city even if the scooters take over the city and crossing the road becomes a possible suicide trip every time. One of my favourite things was embraciing the street BBQ where you cook your own food on an individual fire and sit on tiny little chairs while scooters and cars speed past you beeping their horns. Lush food and great surroundings. We booked outselves on a two night/three day cruise in order to see Halong Bay in all its glory. We were skeptical that the boat would not look quite as good as the one on the flyer but were pleasantly surprised to find it looked just as nice. All the rooms were en suite with a shower on the wall and hot! ... read more

This is going to be a pretty short entry... Last night we went to a local restaurant for tea, which was nice, seems I had the best pick of the meals though...caramel chicken with rice.mmmm From there we headed back to the hostel and caught up with a few of the others before leaving after last orders to a bar/club called the Brwn Eye (or something like that) there were a few backpackers in there and plenty of locals, playing songs going to back to the 80's and 90's. I It was a good night and we danced our feet off!! On the walk back, Carey apprantaly had his phone stolen down the alley...I didnt see this happen but we had been warned! We all got in at around 2am and slpet right though. Local 'Hue ... read more
