Just before New Year we took the bus from Hoi An to Hue (still in Central Vietnam), from where we would be able to make our assault on Laos. The bus takes us first to Marble Mountain, it's raining and we haven't had any breakfast so rather than go and look around the wonderful hand-carved marble sculptures on display we headed straight for the coffee and baquettes! The Sculptors work at the foot of the mountain where great slabs of marble lie around. The rest of the journey is through thickly-forested mountain passes, the cloud drifts like smoke from Red Indian fires. At the valley floor we arrive at Lang Co, surrounded by a mystical lagoon dotted with oyster nets and small boats. We stop for lunch at a roadside cafe and the driver says we ... read more

My second stop on my tour through Vietnam was a bit of a disappointment and vaulted me full-speed into my quarter-life crisis. I was enjoying the tranquility of a cafe and biology book when Joshua brought his tourgroup into the same very cafe. Since I am a clandestine tourist of the same tour in the sense that I am staying at the hotel for free and doing solo-sightseeing on the same itinerary, it is fairly important to not appear to frequently before the "real" tourgroup. Just as they were sitting down, Joshua's phone rang, and was flung across the cafe to me with a quip of "W.H.O. Cambodia." It was indeed Dr. Massimo, my intended advisor for my internship at said institution. His Italianized Inglese came crackling over the line. "Sofia, I have some bad news ... read more

14 hours later and we have arrived in Hue, which is 650 km south of Hanoi. Sometime during the night the weather took a turn for the worse and it is now very overcast with the odd splash of rain.......imagine! Bus wasn't too bad as it was only half full so we had 2 seats each to relax on. Managed to get about 6 hours sleep altogether. Our last day in Hanoi was great, did loads of stuff including our first Xe Om ride. This is basically a motorcycle taxi where you cling on to the driver for all you're worth as he flys around the crazy streets! Got 2 bikes to take us to this prison place which wasn't bad. Also went to the Water Puppet show which was brilliant, definatly recommended!! Went to collect ... read more

Here are what happened during my time spent in South and Central Vietnam, as part of a trip between Thailand and China. Ho Chi Minh City was my first stop. Having been there 8 years ago, I was not intending to stay long. I settled in Pham Ngu Lao, a backpacker area, and during the next 2 days, I revisited some sights which I had been to previously, including the Reunification Palace and the History Museum. Nothing too special to write about. Anyway, HCMC looked a bit different now, with more high-rising, modern buildings in its business district, whereas its people appeared to be more energetic than they were in 1996. For me, this time was more exciting as I had to travel at the back of a motorcycle, not on a tour bus, around ... read more

On our second full day in Hanoi we woke early and went to the Ho Chi Minh Mausolem. It was so full of tourists that I couldnt even take a decent picture. How dare they! Not too far from there was Ho Chi Minh's Relic area, where we saw the house he used to live in. This was where a tour group from a Spanish speaking country begged me to be in a photo with them. Do I look like someone famous there? Ohhh, lucky me! We also checked out the One Pillar Pagoda, The Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton), and The Temple of Literature. At the Hanoi Hilton we got to meet some men who had served some time there. They were from America. I found it interesting that they used broken glass bottles on ... read more

Fantastisk utsikt, men ille aa vite alt ... read more

Do, som eier nevnte kafe.
