I don't know how it happened but despite drinking far too much last night (and mixing our drinks to boot) we both woke up late this mornng feeling relatively hangover free. It was midday before we left our room and with it being our last day here in Kanchanaburi, it seemed fitting to finally take in the biggest of all the tourist attractions here - the Bridge Over the Rver Kwai. We ate lunch and then took a leisurely walk along the main road to the bridge. The road was so quiet, it was hard to believe we were in the middle of a touristy area but when we arrived at the bridge we understood why - every man and his dog had come out in the bright sunshine to enjoy the views. Nevertheless, we popped ... read more

I left Bangkok today and got the bus to Kanchanaburi. It took about two hours and only cost me just over a pound! I'm staying in a guest house next to the river, which is lovely. I walked up to the bridge, which was a little further than I had anticipated! I have some pictures but I can't download then on this computer but will as soon as I can. I went to the museums next to the bridge which tell you about the war and history of the bridge. They were very interesting but also very sad to see how many lives it took. I am hoping to go on a day trek and do a cooking course in the next couple of days as I've heard that both are very good here. With the ... read more

Given our recent bad luck with motorbikes, we decided to give good old pushbikes a go today in order to finally try and track down the elusive Dragon Temple. We were prepared for it this time though - we knew the name of the place in Thai and had a map to help us. What we didn't bank on was the randomly placed misleading roadsigns... It was midday when we set off on our epic bike ride. First of all, we rode through town to the so-called ferry. This turned out to be a flat metal boat that chugs you and your bike/motorbike across the river for just 4 Baht. On the other side, we headed off along a good quality road that was virtually devoid of traffic. At the big junction we carried straight on ... read more

Despite having an early night at the bar last night (we got in by midnight for a change), Glynn couldn't quite drag himself out of bed this morning. That meant that the half day we had remaining for the motorbike went unused but Glynn certainly looked better for the sleep. We took the bike back to the rental shop and stopped off at the Blue Star Guest House where our German friends, Sascha and Ulrike, are staying. They had already booked themselves on an elephant trek which we also wanted to do so we though it would be lots of fun if we all went together :-) We then trundled off to the Jolly Frog for lunch, where the food is very cheap and reasonably good. At 3.30pm we were picked up for the trip in ... read more

One of the things you learn when travelling is that despite all the best planning in the world, your day will never turn out quite as you predicted. Today was going to be just such a day for us... We had a rude awakening to start the day as Glynn forgot to shut off the alarm clock last night when we got back from our most recent drinking session. I crawled slowly our of bed cursing the sunshine like a newly converted vampire. A shower sorted me out and before long, we were zooming off in search of adventure on our moped once again. Our German friends had been to see a so-called Dragon Temple so we decided to try and find it too. Easier said than done, especially if you have no map, forgot to ... read more

The plan today was to rent a couple of mountain bikes and go exploring around and beyond Kanchanaburi but by the time we got round to the hire place it was already midday and it looked like all the bikes were out for the day. Eyeing up the motorbikes keenly, Glynn suddenly suggested we hire one of them instead. 200 Baht later and we were off on our latest mode of transport. Given my recent bad relationship with mopeds, I was glad that we were on a bigger bike with Glynn at the helm. With no map to guide us, we simply pointed the bike in the direction of the river, found a roadbridge across (not the famous bridge btw) and rode into the jungle. The scenery was amazing with tropical tress rustling gently in the ... read more

We decided on a grand plan for the rest of Asia. It took a lot of discussion and debate at the time. There was talk of seeing Central Thailand, Koh Samet and Koh Chang, stopping off at Coral Bungalows for a few days, then a week or two in the Perenthian Islands in Malaysia, however as more drinks flowed we managed to whittle it down to a day trip in Kanchanburi, then directly to Coral for a few more legendary Haad Rin parties with a view to heading down to Malaysia at the end of the trip. Rich James and I set about booking our mini bus back to Chiang Mai then catching a sleeper train direct to Bangkok where we would stop briefly and hop over to Kanchanaburi. We said our worried goodbyes to ... read more

On the map, it looked like it might be a bit complicated to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok but in actual fact it couldn't be simpler. Just follow these 3 instructions and you too could enjoy the wonders of the west of Thailand: Step 1 - Find taxi to take you to southern bus station in Bangkok. Step 2 - Get air con bus to Kanchanaburi for a mere 106 Baht per person (about one pound fifty). Sit back and relax as they serve you ice cold water on the way. Step 3 - Arrive in Kanchanaburi to the sounds of 'taxi mister?'. Agree price of 30 Baht each and take red pick-up truck type bus thingy to guesthouse. Easy! We're staying in the very picturesque Ploy Guest House which is on the main drag by ... read more

After leaving the hectic Bangkok, travelling started here with a 3 days, 2 nights trek in Kanchanburi, home of the River Kwai and some bridge that is famous for some reason. It was an idea given to us by Matt and James as they had done it the week before and said it was brilliant. it didnt let us down. 2 hour jorney after only 2 hours sleep wasnt easy, first came the culture, something we wernt paticularly interested in. Grave yards of soldiers, a trip to the River Kwai museum and and train trip on the 'death railway' wasnt much fun hungover as im sure we would have appreciated it more if we had been sensible the night before, but it wouldnt be that fun that way would it!! After the museums, we came to ... read more

I had been really looking forward to visiting the tiger temple. I recently saw the first season of 'The Amazing Race' where they came to Thailand and one of the challenges was to collect a clue by walking through the tigers at the Tiger Temple in Kachanaburi. I knew then that I had to go and see these amazing creatures for myself. I arranged to go on a tour of the Temple, essentially a 45min ride there and a chance to take photos for an hour, then a ride back into town. They were scheduled to leave at 3:30pm and we must have left late as by the time we arrived they were trying to rush us through and get our photos with the tigers. I had no idea what to expect and was suddenly being ... read more
