Recovery from full moon party night was surprisingly swift. The night itself was pretty much as expected. Absolutely thousands of people from all corners of the globe partying through the night. A dozen or so of us from our hotel took taxi's down to Had Rin and we more or less stuck together for the course of the evening. Fire based stunt opportunities were a little more difficult this time simply because of the sheer number of people on the beach. We returned to the hotel shortly after 5am as things seemed to be deteriorating, a few scuffles were breaking out amongst those who just can't handle their Sang Som (local Thai whiskey).
After a few hours recovery and a revitalising swim we both felt ready to head out & about. We hired a couple of scooters at 200 baht a day (about 4 quid - no idea where the pound sign is on this keyboard) and took the coast road north from our resort at Had Chaophao. Whilst the roads here are a little uneven and littered with stones they are very quiet. The scenery is quite spectacular and it requires effort to keep the eyes on the road.
Hat Salad
Thai Stir Fry. Lush green jungle hillside with swathes of elegant palm trees stretching for the sky. We stopped for late lunch at Hat Salad where I opted for a chicken stir fry coated in Thai herbs and plenty of red chili. The Singha beer washed it down nicely and removed any last remnants of a hangover. Darren opted for burger and chips which he was not impressed with and only managed to consume about half of it. Punishment from the food Gods I would imagine for such an undignified choice of cuisine in such a location. That evening there was more great food in front of me with battered seabass in a wonderful chili and lemongrass sauce. That completed a very good days dining in my view.
Friday we were on the bikes again this time to Ao Chalaklam where we took a long boat around the headland to Bottle Bay
where a beautiful golden sands beach greeted us. A couple of hours snoozing on the beach and a drink at the beachside bar should demonstrate how tough things have become. We got somewhat lost on our return (there are only 2 main roads on the island so we did well)
and thus had to seek assistance from a small bar full of very attractive Thai ladies who also happened to be jolly friendly and quite welcoming. I do believe we had stumbled across a girly bar. Seeing as were there it seemed rude to leave without having a drink. After consumption of a beer and a small crispy grilled beatle which Darren gobbled surprisingly happily (I politely declined on the basis of being too full to consume such a large meal) we were on our way.
Yesterday we said goodbye to Koh Phangan taking the ferry from Throng Sala to Manam on Koh Samui where we took a shuttle bus to the livliest resort on the island Chewang. I would imagine (and hope) it is also the noisiest, smelliest and tackiest resort on the island. The main strip is filled with western fast food chain restaurants and noisy Ozzy bars and the place absolutely wreaks. They seem to have a major drainage issue here and rubbish disposal doesn't seem too high a priority either. I managed to get a reasonable nights sleep despite the screaming whores, outrageously noisy mattress springs in the room next door and the jet engines
Lamai
Thai Boxing roaring 50 ft above on final approach. Nice. We stayed only 1 night before moving to the seabreeze Bungalows in Lamai (15 mins south) whic seems a little less crazy. We have a beachfront bungalow at a bargain 500 baht each. Well, today is of course 'survival Sunday' so I've just finished my Tom Yum soup and now I'm off with dazza to find a sports bar. Fingers crossed, good luck Palace!
