The Phi Phi islands are located off the south east coast of Phuket and were practically destroyed by the Tsunami in 2004. Now the island is pretty much back on its feet with some construction work still going on.
The first thing that struck us about the islands is how perfect and tropical they are. The second thing is how friendly the Thai people are. The main island is known as Koh Phi Phi Don and is the only island that is permanently inhabited, this is where we stayed.
The group of islands was made famous a few years back by the film 'The Beach'. We spent our time here in the main exploring on foot as there are no roads or cars, the only way to get around is by boat or walking. The lack of traffic and noise really hits you as it is a total contrast to the noise and congestion in most parts of Thailand.
Our first stop was to do some snorkeling, its quite surreal swimming with tropical fish you're used to seeing in a fish tank back home! We swam out to a small beach inhabited by wild monkeys and watched them
watch us for a while. After this we got back on the boat and had a guided tour of some of the bays and islands.
The next day we decided to head off on our own and hired a sea kayak. After some initial fears from Vicki about paddling in open deep water, we paddled out and found a beach that was completely deserted, this has now been claimed by us and renamed rather imaginatively 'Vicki and Paul's beach'-genius!
It's hard to believe that places like this still exist and stay, in the main, unspoiled.
To sum up, these islands are complete paradise and anyone who visits Thailand should definitely come here if only for a few hours to appreciate it.
