Trip is just so fabulous, and seems to be getting more so every day... 😊
We've been on the boats for 2 full days now and have just stopped in a place with civilation (obviously) and are going to be having dinner shortly.
Our last night in Kata Beach we went back to the Ska Bar and were out till...uh...well, late. Played some interesting games ("If you could have 5 people in your hot tub, who would they be?") as well as came up with a name for our "group". We are calling ourselves Plumpish Thai. This came from a conversation that began with "Thai women are so thin" which led to "What do they eat? Maybe we should follow the Thai Diet Plan" which ended with Katie announcing that she didn't think ALL Thai women were thin and that she'd gotten a massage earlier that evening by a somewhat "plumpish" thai women. For some reason (possibly something to do with the consuming of alcohol) we all thought that this was hysterically funny - hence, Plumpish Thai was born. We're going to write songs and record them and make an album. There was even a picture taken which we
Kayaking Around
This was our first kayak trip out which was close to sunset on our first day since leaving Phuket. decided will be our first album cover (a giant "PT" spelled out on a stump of a table with Chang and Singha beer bottle caps). Apparently I have also been dubbed the one who will write the lyrics to our songs since I am the only writer on the trip, while Warren (the British one who we are now calling Evil Warren to distinguish him from the other Warren) will write the music as he used to be part of a band and apparently has a not-too-awful singing voice. So we shall see - this might be fun...or at the very least, interesting. 😊
Anyway, onto other activities. To recap yesterday quickly, we were up early-ish, packed up everything, and said goodbye to the Kata Delight. We then drove out to Phatong Nga where we met up with the captains of our boats - an Austrian named Wolfgang is ours and the other boat is being manned by an Aussie named Chris who works for Bob (the owner of the other boat). We sat around enjoying some fruit shakes until they were ready to dingy us out to the cats.
The cats... They're amazing. They're huge - tons
In a Sea Cave
Jean, Shauna, Katie & I all kayaked into this sea cave and climbed up into it. The water was incandescent green - I've never seen anything like it. of deck space, kayacks, and just hte most incredible Thai food prepared for us with love by Joy (our Thai chef - the other boat has Da who is also an amazing cook).
After shoving off, we went north to Ko Hunt. There we went swimming and kayaked around in and out of little caves and sea caves that opened up into caverns that absolutely blew me away with their beauty and peacefulness. Now this is where we're really experiencing the special bit of coming to Thailand when so many are staying away - where we were last night, we were the only ones, but Wolfgang told us that typically there would have been maybe 30 other boats or so there. Instead, we had it all to ourselves. In fact, I feel like we almost have the whole of the Adaman Sea to ourselves. Even looking around during the day we rarely see another boat.
Had the most AMAZING time this morning - got up early and went out kayaking around this island we were anchored off of with Katie. The islands here are made of almost all limestone which easily is manipulated by the sea water and
The Boats
as seen through the opening of one of the sea caves. so had tons of caverns and little sea caves and coves. The bottom of the smaller islands are eroded away so much that they almost appear to hover above the water. We found a little tunnel that had been hollowed out by the water and kayaked into it to discover an open cavern inside the island. It was so beautiful and peaceful and still - not a sound but the birds. We went back later with Shauna & Jean, tied our kayaks to some rocks and climbed up into a sea cave (which we discovered to be full of bats) and climbed around some on the rocks... Unbelievably beautiful...as well as deserted...
Am collecting some interesting stories as well from Wolfgang. He told me this afternoon his tsunami tale... It was really sobering. At one point, they used the kayaks on board to load up with bodies from the water and take them to shore. Unreal.
Okay, going to go for now and get some food - Evil has just come to get me. It's a much smaller group due to cancellations, and I think there's also been a stronger initial bond formed b/c we are the ones
who didn't cancel and are experiencing Thailand in a way that few will be able to claim.
So, I'll write when we hit civilization again - don't know when that will be though! 😊
