irony is always a little quirky Hey, it occurred to me that this is not the first time God prevented you from taking a trip.. I know you recall a certain beyond painful gall bladder incident that kept you from Peru a few years back, but you were able to go again and had a fabulous time! Who knows? It's just interesting.
You're On! Hey Beck! If you're up for a serious backpacking/camping trip, I would LOVE to do this with you next year. Let me know if you want to start planning... :)
so sad at least you didn't get all the way through security and THEN have to turn around. It's funny, Atlanta is ALWAYS packed too, but it was always the people checking in at the desk or checking their bags or something. Security was always surprising quick. However, the long trek to the terminal via the tram was never fun.
Missed you Mom and I were looking forward to having that Starbuck's with you in your Atlanta layover. Oh well, better "luck" next time (as John Calvin would say).
bummer! Hey there Deb, sorry to hear about the travel snafu, but I bet whenever you do end up rebooking it'll turn out to me an absolutely amazing trip!

where one plane dr closes... oh deb...i feel your pain, really i do. But you are right, where God shuts a door, sometimes abrubtly and loudly, He always has a fabulous reason and another will open up that is by far, worlds better :)
maybe we can do the trip together next year! :) Len is about all ready for me to run away with a good friend for a fun, child-less time.
ironic Hey! I'm looking up stuff on Asheville, NC for when we go to Biltmore and get this-it's called the "Paris of the South" How funny that you were in the "Paris of the North" in Alaska, I"ll be at the one in NC.. wonder where the Paris' of the East and West are.. :)
I second Esther's comment Here Here! I was shocked when you said that while you had brought along some books you have yet to read much of them!! MAN!! Talk about RELAXATION...I would be all about sitting around getting massages, eating good food and reading all day. Oh, and swimming! SIGH...vacation for SURE!
oh so pretty! It's all so beautiful and so peaceful looking.. I hope you are getting rejuvenated and rested in the cool, crisp Alaskan air. I miss you! love you, and talk to you when you get home.
Remember! Remember you are on VACATION - it sounds incredible and looks so fun - so don't worry so much about the weirdness of being on a cruise or of taking official tours. So it's not really your style . . . it sure beats sitting in an office and commuting every day eh? The cabin looks fantastic and your balcony sounds like the perfect place to read for 8 hours straight - so so so fun and relaxing. So jealous :) Keep the entries coming it's fun to read about it all - get some pics of the cruise ship itself the interior and all. Just embrace the cruisy-ness of it all and keep us all posted on the tackiest and wackiest of vacationing on board a floating town.
Not your thing I'm glad you did this even though it clearly isn't your type of thing. If you hadn't, wouldn't you have always wondered what it would be like? If I were you part of me would be wondering as I sweated profusely hiking up some mountain dreaming of massages and pedicures...
I Agree I am leaving for my Alaskan cruise in a few days and I have to agree with what you say. I too am the sort of person who likes to go on the off the beaten trail travel experiences and cruises just don't do it for me. But I agreed to do the trip with my parents and I am hoping for a good experience in the end. Oh yeah, NO DRESS Codes on Vacation. The nerve of the cruise ships and I could have stayed in some south American country for two weeks for what I am spending on shore excursions. Good Luck and have fun on the cruise.
you'll be suprised I noticed your title, and thought I would send you a quick note... I was of the same mind set until I took a four day cruise from Vancouver to Ketchikan a few years ago.
I am active and like to explore so thought I would be bored silly - was pleasantly suprised.
The stop is Ketchikan was nothing really - it is just a tourist port - but what I really enjoyed was the activities on board. I played tennis, hoolahooped, ran, swam, danced, ate, golfed, listened to love music...you name it. I was so exhausted by the time we returned I was ready to be home.
Cultural it isn't...In fact the whole think is a little 'LV meets ST' but if you appreciate it for what it is you'll have a good time.
I would suggest following the dress code about the evening formal wear (I didn't and should have). The evening is all about glamour...think Love Boat!
Have a great trip...and in the mean time, if you know of any women looking for a travel partner for the southern US states in August please let me know!
Wow I like your pictures. Was it mainly the overcast day on some of them or was it the dry bag that made some of them a bit darker than you might expect. Unless that's the effect of the endless water spray. :)
I LOVE pictures 2 and 18 especially. That fireworks make the falls look like they're floating. Good job. Can't wait to see more as you get more and more used to the camera! Can you take it to Antarctica?
Give LA another chance What they say about LA is true. You have to go or meet up with someone who knows the place. The great thing is that in one area, you can do everything from hitting the night life, going to the beaches, exploring all the different ethnicities all in one place. But it is not a partcularly tourist friendly place. The city lives it's own life and doesn't really cater to tourists so you gotta really live here to enjoy it. By the way, I would never stay in a downtown hotel here for all the reasons you mentioned, but there is a great downtown architeture tour.
I've visited most of the US and lived in NYC and Texas. I've also traveled a bit overseas, but when all is said and done, I would not make any other city my permanent home.
Oops! Thanks so much for pointing out that map error, Shauna! I should have noticed it myself, but clearly didn't...of course I didn't actually MAKE the map, just the route line. Anyway, I went back and took out the mountain label. Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed my home state! Hey Deb, sounds like you had a nice little adventure cruising some of the highlights of Oregon. Lovely Crater Lake pics! By the way, thanks for helping to spread the word on how to pronounce the state name - we natives appreciate it!
I grew up visiting cousins in Bend periodically, and also popped over there across the Cascades (not the Rockies as shown on your map!) for several outdoor adventures during college, and I completely understand and agree with your high esteem of the area. Maybe some spring we should go ski at Bachelor then explore the canyon country and painted hills, eh?
Thanks for keeping us all posted on your adventures!
You were practically in the neighborhood! Nice to read all about exploring your roots. I'm about to do the same, taking a trip to Michigan to see where my dad was born and meet some 2nd cousins I've discovered over the Internet. Bend looks beautiful and how special to visit the very places your parents lived as a young married couple. I so disappointed not to see the house and all the yucky colors...I kept scrolling and hoping. Ha ha... guess you wanted to forget it, huh?
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote: "Not all those who wander are lost". This has become something of a mantra for my life which brings me to the question: Can wanderlust be in your genetic code? If so, then that would explain mine... I have always loved adventure and travel, even as a kid. I've discovered that the older I get, the more adventuresome I become so, if this trend continues, I'll probably be trying to get on a space shuttle flight when I'm 80. In the meantime, I'm happy to share my growing adventures - enjoy!
