Paradise...
Samui Beach Resort It has clearly been far too long since I last wrote a blog entry: I must have been having too much fun! We spent a very relaxing first few days of our beach holiday in Railay – a very expensive and quiet resort that is still on the mainland but only accessible by boat from Krabi. There wasn’t much to do except rock climb or sunbathe, so we chose to sunbathe!
Our next stop was Ko Phi Phi, the first of our islands! This is where the backpacker scene really kicked off with people really only there to party. Amazingly, I managed to meet up withHoover, my tour guide from Contiki NZ who now lives on Phi Phi. It was awesome to see her and we spent two nights having a few drinks and catching up with her, reliving tales of NZ and hearing all about her new life – she spends most of her day diving, not a bad life if you can get it! We also did a half day boat tour out toMayaBayand other small coves on the islands around Phi Phi. Maya Bay is the beach made famous by Leo in ‘The Beach’ so
"I don't drink"
A night out on Samui I can now say I’ve sat on the same beach as Leonardo DiCaprio (just 15 or so years apart…)..
After that we had a pretty long journey back over the mainland and onto theislandofKo Samui, on the other side. It is safe to say that it was here I resorted back to being the Fran you all know and love! We lucked out on our accommodation – pool, restaurant, own beach area and, above all else, amazing people to hang out with! It was here that we met Stewart, Sandrina, Louise, Lucy, Sam and, our favourite Germans, Gerhard and Matthias (although ‘favourite’ was replaced with another word beginning with ‘F’ for the majority of the trip). By day we sunned ourselves by the swimming pool and by night we came alive with buckets (or ‘eimers’ for the Germans) and drinking games and, occasionally, some late night pool/sea swimming. We had one night in a bar on the rocks, imaginatively called The Rock Bar, one night playing Ring of Fire by the pool – I lost in monumental fashion for which I blame Holly and, to some extent, Matthias – one night doing nothing and just recovering from
Ko Tao
Sunset on yet another island Ring of Fire and two nights in an Irish pub, The Shamrock. The second night we had there was our last night on the island and, conveniently, the Sunday whenEnglandbeatFranceby a very nervy two points. There was football on as well and obviously the obligatory alcohol was flowing, so everyone was happy! I can’t even begin to describe how sad I was to say goodbye to all these people last Monday. Thank goodness for Facebook…
Also last Sunday, Holly’s friend Bully came out to join us for a week so we became a threesome and he got thrown in at the deep end with being made to drink just a few short hours after arriving! I don’t think he minded. He’s been very good company and very easy to get on with but his time here was shortlived and he flies back to theUKtomorrow night. Ko Tao, where we are about to leave, has been another relaxing island, although we have tried to be a little bit more active during the day. Unfortunately, I’ve been feeling pretty ill here and even had to go to the doctor and get some antibiotics, so I haven’t felt like doing much and even laying in the sun has been too difficult at times – I must be ill! We managed to play mini golf on one afternoon, I didn’t win but neither did I lose (the beauty of playing with three people!). We have shopped, eaten, sunbathed and generally just relaxed knowing full well that it is nearly time to get back to theUK.
We leave the island this afternoon to get a boat back to mainland and then an overnight bus toBangkok. Once there, we will take Bully out to see the sights of the capital before seeing him to the airport and then collecting our thoughts ready for Friday’s flight. Louise, from Ko Samui, is getting to Bangkok on Wednesday so we are hoping to spend a couple of days with her and Holly and I will also be swapping photos, stories and anything else that, throughout the last six weeks we’ve said “I’ll get that from you before we leave” about. It’s going to be a nice few days and I’d much rather do it this way round than be flying straight home from the islands. As much as I’m totally ready to be at home – cuddles from Mummy Holmes have never been more desired – I need a few days to sort the last six months of my life out!
Anyway, watch out England, the end is near and soon I’ll be gracing you all with my presence once again.
