The last three days have been an absolute mission - more death defying bus journeys, an over night sleeper train (Our beds right beside toilet) and almost missing our flight to the islands all for the sake of a BigMac!! On this final note I have to say we are complete idiots! We had a whole day of pottering around in Bangkok before our 8.30pm flight to Phuket. At 7pm we decide to go roaming the streets for a McDonalds and whilst we were deliberating over Fanta/Coke and BBQ/Chilli sauce the last call was being made at Gate B2 for two idiotic Scots who were about to miss their flight! By 8.10pm I am running through the airport with twice my body weight on my back (rucksak) and James balling at me to hurry up! Stressful – but we made it!
We arrived in Phuket late at night and made straight for our hotel where we collapsed in an exhausted heap, not seeing a bed in three days had taken its toll. As we only have a week to explore the Islands we have whittled them down to two – Ko Phi Phi and Railay.
On first impressions we
were glad not to be staying in Phuket any longer than a night and hopped aboard the boat to Ko Phi Phi...
...How did we end up In Magaluf??! Steak and Ale pies on offer at every corner, British Bull Dog tattoos and heavy hardcore blaring. To top it off we had nowhere to stay (again!!) and ended up paying premium price for an average room, why did we have to come at peak season??! Our Island adventures where not off to a great start, so we hit the beach to wind down.
WOW!!! Absolutely stunning, a long stretch of white sand hugged in between green jeweled forestry and clear blue sea – now this is what we came to Phi Phi for! Our initial reservations were quickly put to bed and we were back to enjoying beach life. Just as we were starting to relax and enjoy our beautiful surroundings, Jamesy went for a dip, only for a used tampon to float past him - G.U.T.T.E.D!
I had my day in the sun, and apparently this is all I am allowed. Jamesy gets ants in his pants if we have anymore time at the beach so
for the next few days we had to book up on activities. We had a full day long tail boat trip where we stopped off and snorkeled at various points around the Island, Jamesy even spotted a reef shark!! We also went to Maya Bay a.k.a 'The Beach' which was obviously far from deserted but still really really beautiful – unfortunately Leo was nowhere to be seen!
That night we decided to embrace the party atmosphere and order some Thai buckets whilst watching some Mai Thai boxing and some other drunken fooools jump into the ring to try their hand at it! The night life on the Island was actually really relaxed and we were happy to listen to some good tunes whilst sipping away on cocktails!
Also whilst on the Island we climbed up to Phi Phi viewpoint, where you can see the whole Island. It was a tough climb in the sweltering heat but the views were well worth it! Its hard to believe that only six years ago this Island was completely wiped out by the Tsunami and now I imagine it is more beautiful than ever before.
Having spent a few days on
the Island our initial reservations have been well and truly put behind us. We were grouchy and exhausted after such a gruesome journey to get here. Phi Phi is an Island where you can dip into a bit of everything may that be partying, relaxing on the beach, Steak pies, Thai Street food, plenty of activities, diving etc! It really does have everything and you can pick and choose as you please, which we did!
Lots of Love, Claire and James x x x
