I finally made it to Koh Pha Ngan after a long bus-taxi-train-boat trip. Leaving the Perenthians was tough,...I really enjoyed my time there. When we first arrived here, Keith and I found the guesthouse where Tom and Sarah were staying. I decided to drop my bags off in their room and head to the main tourist part of the island called Had Rin. Keith found a bungalow on the beach where the others were staying (Ban Thai).
I decided to do the unthinkable and walk from Ban Thai to Had Rin. This was not an easy feat in the heat of the day...and while I was making my way up a practically vertical hill, a nice Dutch man stopped his bike and gave me a ride all the way into town. What a gentleman. I spent the rest of the day walking around,...meeting random Israeli's who invited me for a chat on their balcony, internetting, and taking in the beauty of the island.
At dinner that evening I met an Irish girl named Sarah. She was dining solo as well, so we joined forces and chatted about our travels. I was really up for going out that night...and luckily
Koh Pha Ngan
Irish Sarah! enough Sarah had no objection. So we headed to the beach.
That night we were introduced to buckets. These buckets consist of taking a small beach bucket and dumping alcohol and a random mix drinks inside. Our choice for the night was vodka, coke, and red bull. As rumor has it, the red bull here in thailand has been banned from most countries. Inviting.
During our first bucket while we were sitting on the mats along the beach, we met an Aussie guy by the name of Paul who insisted on sharing his broken hearted love story with us. This story consisted of a girlfriend who, after a one-year long distance relationship, had decided to inform Paul ONE WEEK before his arrival home that she had fallen in love with another man. So Paul was heart-broken. And the more he drank, the more we heard...and although neither Sarah nor I are evil people, by about the second hour, we were getting sick of Holly ourselves.
However, by that point, we were further along with the buckets, and all we were focusing on was our great dancing skills. We even danced in a completely empty club on the
beach, attempting to have the DJ play our requests. The dancing lasted for quite a while, moving from the deserted dance floor to the crowded beach, where we met two danish boys that had been in my taxi from the Perenthians to the Malaysian border.
The dancing lasted all night, and we saw the sun come up. At that point I though it may be a good time to head home. For some sleep in preparation for the real Full Moon Party.
The night of the Full Moon Party started with some body paints a la Sarah and Tom. Sarah painted some colorful designs on my arms and back with glow in the dark paints. I was really up for the party, and when we all arrived in Had Rin, I was thrilled to bump into Sarah (the Irish one) who I had made no plans with in the haze of the previous night!
Sarah and I ended up sticking together for the night, somehow moving apart from the rest of the crowd. That night was a complete contrast to the previous night. The beach was absolutely packed. With herds of people moving in a circle
Koh Pha Ngan
The Swedish Boys around the different clubs. I have to say I preferred the previous night - both for the crowd and for the music. It might have been the hangover. But we DID have buckets, we DID dance, and we DID stay up till first light.
After a bit of a sleep the next day, Sarah and I met again at the beach. It was Sarah's last day on the island before she headed to Bangkok to catch her flight back home. That day Sarah kept talking about getting her ear pierced...but due to a sheer fright of needles, she kept making excuses of why she should delay it ('It's gonna hurt''It's expensive''I need to take a shower') but somehow, I talked her into it...and she did it!! What a proud moment. I really enjoyed my time with Sarah, and I was sad to see her go the next morning.
That morning I decided to move my stuff to Had Rin. I found a basic bungalow along the sunset beach for 100 Baht. The owners were fantastic, and the beach was right outside my door. That evening I was having dinner and I bumped into Harj - my friend from
Koh Pha Ngan
Full Moon Party Beach Cameron Highlands! He was with a few of his friends who he had met in Australia. They were Swedish, but knew a lot of random Finnish phrases, which was a constant entertainment for the three days we hung out together. Weather in Koh Pha Ngan is constantly changing, and my plans keep changing along with it. For now, I'm quite happy in my beach bungalow. Living the life of a beach bum. In the future...I'll keep you informed.
