I arrived back in Thailand on July 5, and met back up with my buddy Ty as he was still traveling about from my previous visit here. We spent a few days in Bangkok before he had to head home. Bangkok is one of those cities where you can't wait to leave, its extreamly hot, noisy and overpriced by "Thai standards". If your like most tourists you stay on Koh San road and end up walking it 20 times a day "at least thats what I did". However it being a big city there is always somthing to do. So Ty and I checked out the weekend market, he bought a suit and eventually curiousity got the better of us, so we took in a Pong Show, and checked out one of the Red Light Districts on Soy Cowboy Rd. The weekend market was super big and we got lost twice, once within the market, it took a while to find our way out, and once when we thought we were smart enough to take the subway. The subway system is very clean and state of the art, its just that we didn't have any maps with us, and were trying
Maya Bay
From the movie "The Beach" to find a shopping center and we didn't know what it was called. So after about an hour of running around the city, (were talking some doggey Bangkok backstreets) we hopped in a cab and headed back to Koh San.
As for the pong show and Red Light districts, both were basically what I had expected but at the same time totally different. One thing that surprised me about the Pong show was that there was more ladies there than guys, and from what I have heard from others it was the same case when they went. I guess everyone is curious, and besides, Thailand is one of the only places in the world your going to see that. The Red light area, was really just a bunch of strip bars, with girls dancing half dressed or naked with numbers on them, and from what I saw, its a bunch of middle aged, and old men who take the girls home. I asked one guy what the deal was, being as nieve as I am. Apparently they pay a bar fee and then the girl can leave the bar, what she charges is her business. It was quite funny
Monkey Bay
Thats my kind of monkey as the girls didn't pay much attention to us as we were young and they could tell we were just there to see what was going on. Those old guys are pretty creepy. But at least I can say we seen it. Curiousity satisfied.
After Ty left I fell ill for three days and basically didn't leave my hotel. I was even starting to regret coming back as I felt so crappy, but I got over it, and met a guy named Ben from England while having breakfast. He was heading down south to Krabi so I decided to join him. We hopped on a night bus "I hate busses-shoulda took the train" for a 15 hour excusion down to Krabi. We arrived in Krabi tired, sore, and hungry, only to find out that there isn't anything in the actual town to do. There is however all sorts of activites in the surrounding area, and we decided to base ourselfs out of Ao Nang about 25 minutes down the road.
Ao Nang is a small city and has one main road along the beach. It being low season we managed to get a rocking place to stay for
Hanging out on the Beach
Left to right Ben, James, Carley only 600 baht between the two of us. It had three beds, a couch, air con, cable TV and a mini bar, and as far as budget places go this was very nice.
We went on a boat tour of the surrounding islands. We snorkeled at Lohsamah Bay with colorful fish in shallow waters, and swam in a fantastic lagoon at Piley Bay, seen Monkeys at you guessed it Monkey Bay, seen the Viking cave - home to some type of swallow, and explored Bamboo Island. The best stop of the day though was Maya Bay, the place where they filmed the movie "The Beach". It was an amazing day, the weather was hot, the waters warm and the senery unbelievable. We spent most of the day swimming at the different locations and met three girls from Ireland. Later that night we all went and partied at ..... wait for it ... an Irish Pub, how fitting.
The following day we spent swimming and just relaxing on the beach with a couple we had met on the bus over and two mutal friends, whom we like to bug about them dating. The couple from the bus are hilarious, there names are Alex and Henry, and the others are Carley and James. So far everyone I have been hanging out with is from somewhere in England. So its been quite funny for me to hear new expresions for everything, my favorite so far is "I couldn't be asked". They would use it in reference to what they wouldn't do. Ex. I couldn't be asked to wake up before 10:00. The beach here in town is good, the water gets to about waste deep right away, then stays like that for a hundred meters or so, good for playing volleyball or just splashing around in the water. The bottom is also sandy, most times there lots of coral or rocks at the beachs I have been to, so thats also a nice feature.
