we think that Pai has taken off in terms of tourism in the last couple of years as we have not been to a town which prides it self on being so wonderful before... wherever we went through South East Asia and also back home, people recommended Pai to us... and we were definatly impressed. We found some cute little bungalows across a bamboo bridge/river to stay in - now they were cute at first, cheap and easy - but after the third night of a hard wooden matress on the floor, no real light, walls that you could see outside through, under 10 degrees nights, no bathroom in our room and no hot water in the morning we really felt like the cute was wearing off... we felt like we had been camping, but this turned out to be great prepration for our trek (but more on that later). So we came to Pai after a few days in Chiang Mai with our posse from the boat - Chiang Mai is a really busy, but ncie city - so so much shopping to be done so we have definatly taken advantage of that... packs are really damn full these days
Jess Jess
i really like this photo hey - Darce (Jess is now using her day pack as an extra compartment of her pack, and using one of her 300 new bags as her day pack). When in Pai we did what everyone else seems to do and we hired some motorbikes... yes that's right Jess and I rode motorbikes, talk about adventure seekers. (Trev, Jessi says that she is really really sorry about being an adventure rider - she promises she will never do it again, it was only because she felt so safe with my caring influence) We were pretty tough with our auto scooters and our helmets. It was pretty scary but we were with some people who had done it before so they gave us all the riding tips and away we went. Jess spent the entire two days looking at the road... like i would ask her if she had seen the airport (airports are pretty big structures right!?) and she was like... there isnt an airport here is there, i was like umm... we just rode past it... not sure if that is a safe way to ride or not. So we did the touristy things that Pai had to offer, as we like
to keep our selves busy - we went to hot springs, waterfalls, caves, canyons, markets and rice paddys... they were all pretty good, but the general feeling that perhaps Pai really IS the place were you do nothing, as noone else seemed to be visting all these places. So we headed off on our trek... it turned out to be a two day, one night trek with no added extras like rafting, but the stories kept changing as to whetehr there was actually any water to raft anyho). We went with three 22 yr old Aussie girls from Sydney and a Danish couple - oh and the cutest instructer ever, she was just great! The first day consited of walking up hills, mountains and rocks... all pretty dusty and dry, but still we felt like we were in the middle of nowhere... We arrived at about 3pm at the village we were staying in, all calm and peaceful, until we were all doing nothing. When all of a sudden, all the women of the village jumped up and created a market, right in the house we were staying in. So those of you that think that you cant enjoy a
the tough bikie
check out this tough bikie chick... bit of shopping while trekking through the thai wilderness, think again! It was all a bit awkward actually and the pressure to buy was intense... not much else but to buy something small and have a laugh. We had the absolute worst sleep of our lives... imagine a farm, well imagine sleeping right in the middle of that farm with 1000 dogs, 20 cows, 33 cats, 58 pigs and about a billion roosters who, contary to popular belief actually cock a doodle doo all night, and all day long - not just this wake up thing... so, the next day of walking was a bit more tiring than the first - with all of us, tired and so sore from the wooden floor and no pillow we walked from 9am until 4pm... but we saw beautiful villages, waterfalls, a stunning, huge cave, rivers, elephants, spiders, monks and fish. It was pretty great and we felt like fitness freaks, until the back and neck pain set in... now we have spent the last day whinging to each other about the pain we are in. So we also headed out to a groovy pub last night in Pai town - BeeBop, which
actually had live music - Pai was pretty amazing with the whole music scene, a really great place to chill for a while if you have an instrument and dreds, oh and lots of money. We found out that the hottest dreddy, hippy boy was staying at a very nice, expensive establishment... it was ok, we liked out $3 a night bungalow... We headed back to Chiang Mai today, on the public bus - which involved a whole back row spew... Jess was kind and didnt let me know about it though, lucky lucky! Just been shopping all night tonight, as i was supposed to shop up before i went home, but suprise suprise Jess has actually bought double the amount i have... it is our last night together, so we had a "flash" dinner at a hotel buffet - it was actually only $4 and was the most random meal i think both of us have ever had - anyone tried deep fried lettuce and leaves before, because we now have! We both head to Vietnam tommorow - i'm off to Ho Chi Minh for 2 nights - then eeekkk home - will be home on Valentines day and
i havent had chocolate in a while, so it will be ok if you buy me a few... Jess is off to Hanoi (North Vietnam) and will continue the travels without me. She is actually devistated about this, she is depressed and keeps getting quite emotional, i have to keep telling her to pull herself together - its so not cool to be an obsessive friend - so, we prob wont see each other for another 6 months, which is indeed an odd feeling. So if you find Jess even remotely interesting then keep posted on her adventures, i know i will be! xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
