Armed with our trekking gear, floppy hats and walking sticks we wave goodbye to civilisation and head for the hills on our three day trek. Our journey began with an elephant ride through the jungle followed by a three hour hike to our first hilltribe hut pearched half way up a mountain next to a waterfall. But there was no hot shower to look forward to upon arrival, instead our sweaty bodies had the pleasure of bathing in the freezing, yet very refreshing stream infront of the waterfall and 'using the bathroom' involved squatting over a whole in the ground, of which the Thai's call the 'happy room', as you can imagine it wasn't the most pleasant experience! We spent the evening sat around a fire and then released air balloons into the sky to rid ourselves of bad luck (Thai tradition). Day two of the trek began with another three hour hike to the second village where we were greeted by many Thai children wanting to play football and sing to us, many squeeling pigs, chickens and their chicks, stray dogs and their puppies and a few cockerill's that decided to wake us at 5 am the next morning! Day
three - another 3 hour hike and finally our tired, smelly, bruised and mossi bitten bodies returned back to cilvilisation for a hot shower and a few beers. It was an experience we will never forget, it certainly opened our eyes to the way others live and made us appreciate how lucky we are.
