Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Bangkok...Yep...Little did I know...indeed...little did I know how well that bitch of a city served an alpha male...I was in fact a "gamma male" that turned alpha. My life surrounding ancient temples...Buddhist life in a kingdom of old dynasties...Life still had ancient touches to it... Prior to the 2000's, girls in Thailand where generally not allowed to have boyfriends...Families had a watchful eye over them...Foreigners were out of their watch...How handy was that for a beautiful Thai girl in the 90's?... I tell you...Almost every girl out of a good, rich family wanted to be your girlfriend...No kidding...That's when I decided...Let's call it home...Indeed it become my home in paradise for years to come...I even through in a business I run in Bangkok successfully...Well, than came 2001...Things have changed to the bad...worse...worst...... read more

APRIL 1991 WAS A MEMORABLE TIME in my life since that was the first time when I have to travel abroad - going to Thailand for my postgrad program. I was lucky to be accepted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) located in Pathumthani Province (just 30 minutes from the old Don Muang airport) to pursue a MSc degree in Urban Planning. It was not easy to accept the fact that I will be leaving my home country and be a stranger in a Buddhist nation. With my positive attitudes towards living, it was not really hard to be exposed to a different culture. Asian Institute of TechnologyMy AIT life was never been dull considering that I did alot of things that improved my personal wellbeing as well as my spiritual orientation. Aside from ... read more

Our last day in Thailand was a busy one of shopping, checking for mail and getting our hair cut. And what a hair cut. I asked for short, but short by Thai standards means a few millimetres off bald. I cried my eyes out afterwards. In the evening we went to the sex / shopping district and this time we decided that we would actually go into one of these clubs as people had continuously been telling us that you had to see what went on to believe it. They were right. The 'show' consisted mainly of near naked women dancing around, interrupted every so often by additional pieces of entertainment like shooting golf balls from you know where and doing unspeakable things with sparklers or other weird and wonderful objects. After a while, some other ... read more

Pattaya is the place that you would end up with if you combined Benidorm and Amsterdam and gave it an oriental flavour - nothing but huge great hotels and bars full of prostitutes. Everywhere we went there were the cries of "Hello sexy man, I want to go with you!" There were the usual fat Germans, walking around with tiny Thai girls. On the positive side however, after all the secluded, no-frills places we'd been to so far, Pattaya was much more like the resort type holiday that you go to to have a good time - bars, clubs, lively beaches, jet-skis, live Thai-boxing, junk food, ice-cream parlours, decent accommodation etc. etc. We spent most of the days on the beach either growing the skin cancer, swimming or trying out the jet skis. We'd then go ... read more

The only seats available back to Bangkok were on the economy bus, so Tiny and I decided to head back so that we could do some of the tourist bits and the others would follow later on the VIP bus. They had probably managed to find a snooker hall in Chiang Mai. The first day back in Bangkok started early as we arrived at 6.30am, and it turned into one of the most 'eventful' of the whole year away, potentially bringing the year to a premature end. Naive is a word that comes to mind regarding this story. Gullible, is another, along with reckless, foolish and stupid. Any second hand car salesmen or confidence tricksters who are reading this and think that they'll be able to pop around here for some easy money, please note that ... read more

Next we wanted to head north which meant going via Bangkok. This time, we found a guest house which did not turn its fans off at night. Tiny and I set off for the American Express office as they have a service whereby they will accept mail for anyone who has American Express Travellers Cheques. Tiny had fourteen letters from his girlfriend back in England, which considering how long we had been away was pretty good going. That brings me to my next travel tip, although email has probably made it obsolete now. Your parents may not be very impressed about you turning down a job to go off round the world and your girl/boy-friend might be all bitter and twisted about being dumped for a year, but there is a chance that somebody somewhere might ... read more

Despite the lack of sleep we had the energy to do the tourist bit and visit the Grand Palace. To get to there, we took a ride in a glorified three-wheeled lawn mower called a tuk tuk. The combination of this being seriously overloaded and the psychotic tendencies of the driver meant that it was a hairy ride. Two of us had to hang out of each side of it and then grit our teeth as the driver swerved between traffic on both sides of the road. We learnt the hard way that you agree the cost of the journey before you travel as it saves a lot of arguing. That was only our first mistake of the day. The second was to try and get into the Grand Palace in shorts and tee shirts. A ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok and got reunited with our backpacks (always a relief) and then proceeded through customs unhindered (always a relief, but then who in their right mind would smuggle drugs or anything else for that matter into Thailand). There were a lot of very stern looking guards with very big machine guns in the airport, but that didn’t stop you being accosted by people offering you everything under the sun. It was basically a case of "spot the foreigners who have just got off a plane and are therefore disoriented, tired and haven't got a clue about the country they've just arrived in. As I will elaborate, this is one of those times when it's handy to have a backpack. It also means that the porters who frequent many airports can't grab you luggage ... read more
