It seems we have arrived in Bangkok right when things are coming to a head with the government and protesters. The news is reporting that the government is aggressively (with weapons) trying to bring an end to the protests and it seems that central Bangkok has become that much more of a dangerous place. Thankfully, we are sticking close to our hotel which is really nice, very near the airport, and very safe.
It is still a bummer that we won't get to see any of Bangkok this time around but maybe they will have things smoothed out when we come back through in a couple of weeks.
Our flights were all very smooth and easy! I think my total flying time between yesterday and Monday was somewhere around 25 hours but I have to say, it passed pretty quickly and I was able to sleep a good part of the trip. Kimika was lucky enough to be upgraded from New York to Tokyo but the rest of us were stuck in coach which was totally packed! Definitely felt like sardines on that 13-hour-leg! One upside to the situation in Thailand is that no one (except us!) is coming
here, so we had an almost entirely empty flight from Tokyo. Delta still managed to lose Jason's bag somehow and they still seem to have no idea where it is...maybe Detroit, maybe Tokyo, who knows?! We had our first dose of authentic Thai food at 2:00 a.m. when we arrived and it hit the spot after all those disgusting airplane meals.
We fly out later this afternoon for Phnom Penh so we're going to lay low at the hotel today. We asked the concierge if there were any tourist sites or open markets that were safe for us to visit but she didn't think it was a good idea. I guess I will just have to get a massage!
