Newark to Tokyo
The plane icon seemed to never move After 30+ long hours of travel, I made it to the hotel and breakfast. Not much sleeping last night. I had to take a walk around the local area when I got in, just out of curiosity. Not surprisingly, there were lots of changes I saw at 1:00 in the morning from the last time I was here, nearly 3 years ago. I’m sure some of it is the normal in and out of businesses, and some related to Covid. Covid probably cause more than it’s share of places to close. For those of you who have been here, the Ambassador is pretty much same same. There are a couple more fish tanks coming in the doors. They did renovate the breakfast area, and it looks really nice. Tables are spread out much more (Covid) and masks are suggested but not required Probably due to the tourist industry not recovering fully yet, but breakfast is not crowded at all. But now, it’s off to the BTS station at Nana and the first workout!!
The BTS fare to Punnawithi is still the same as before, and I even remembered which side of the station to be on to go the correct
Wat Dhammamongkol
View from BTS station as the rain started. The Wat is near the gym. direction. The train was fairly empty, but it is Saturday morning. Just as the train arrived at my stop, one of those short, heavy gully washer thunderstorms hit. Luckily, I had my poncho in my bag. Rained the entire walk from the station to the gym, so that means long jump rope to start the morning. When I slogged in the the gym, there was another guy sitting on the bleachers, waiting to train. He didn’t run or jump rope when Fahlaep came out they got in the ring and did 4 rounds while I was pounding out my 30 minutes of jumprope. Of course the rain stopped, so I did get to run 5 laps. It actually didn't feel as hot and humid as Savannah while I was running, and it was almost an easy recovery run after the jumprope. And then the hard part started. It ended up being four 5 minute rounds. This was my first time training with Fahlaep, so he was probably just trying to see what I knew and how hard to push today. First round was pretty good. Standard jab, cross, hooks, elbows, and kicks, teens, and blocks. Finished the round with 10
Eminent Air training
There were 3 more people after me getting in the ring with Fahlaep. Busy for a Saturday. fast kicks, both right and left. That was the killer for that round. Next round was similar, but he added in a few little changes. The knees came in this round, alternating left and right, and a series of 10 teeps with each leg. Lots of blocking kicks and counters too. The round finished with 10 power kicks on each leg. That round also felt pretty good, although I was starting to regret eating breakfast. Round 3 was more of the same, but it seemed like the pace was a bit quicker, or maybe I was just slowing down. More of the same punch and kick combos and finished with the machine gun punches AND 10 left and right kicks to totally burn out. And the last round I tried different kick blocks, passing through and kicking and catching and kicking. On one of the catches Fahlaep swept my legs and I don’t even know how it happened. A couple of things he pointed out that I’ve heard before, were to relax, and to watch my stance. I was getting to far sideways which made it harder to block kicks. All in all, not too bad for the first day, after traveling, and with random periods of sleep. I may just do one session Monday morning also, just to see if I’ve acclimated any better after a couple full days on the ground here. going to try for a little nap and then off to explore the area and see what else has changed, and find a bank to exchange some money.
