Our last week absolutely flew by, especially as we only had 3 days of volunteering to do! We spent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday doing the usual but we didn’t have to tank clean as the sea was too rough to pump the water from. Saying goodby to our classes was sad as it has been fun to teach them even if they have been a bit mischievious at times. We started the weekend early as Thursday was a poya day which meant we had the day off.
On Thursday we headed to Mirissa beach for 2 nights which was idyllic and beautiful however the weather was not on our side as it rained most of the time we were there. On the way there we stopped at Hikkaduwa to do some souvenir shopping however everything was closed due to the poya day celebrations. For dinner we had fresh fish which was delicious and had been caught locally.
On the Friday the sun finally came out for us so we spent most of the day on the beach. Just off the shore there were lots of stilts but no fishermen which was a shame. We were sunbathing on the beach
when 5 dogs started attacking each other right next to where we were lying which was quite scary and a sri lankan man had to rescue our stuff for us. That evening we had calamari again caught that day from the local harbour literally minutes away from the restaurant.
We travelled down the road to Unawatuna on the Saturday to spend our last night at a different beach resort, stopping at Weligama along the way. As the rain started again we went to a local hotels swimming pool and swam in the rain. The pool was hot and luxurious and made a nice change from the sea. For lunch we went to a roti shop which was like savoury pancakes and you could choose from a selection of fillings. That evening we went to an all you could eat BBQ buffet which was great and we went up so many times that we had to be rolled out of the restaurant! We then moved on to KINGFISHER AS IT IS THE PLACE TO BE ON A SATURDAY NIGHT APPARENTLY HOWEVER WE WERE THE ONLY ONE’S THERE SO WE HAD A COCKTAIL AND THEN HEADED BACK. MINE LOOKED GROSS BUT TASTED
REALLY GOOD.
WE GOT UP TO SATURDAY AND HAD BANANA PANCAKES FOR BREAKFAST WITH HONEY AND REALLY GOOD COFFEE. WE SUNBATHED FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS BUT AS WAS THE CASE WITH THE WHOLE WEEKEND THE HEAVENS OPENED AND THE DOWN POUR BEGAN. SO WE HEADED BACK TO KOSGODA EARLY SO THAT WE COULD PACK OUR BAGS AND GET READY FOR OUR FLIGHT. ON THE WAY BACK WE STOPPED IN A COUPLE OF SHOPS AND FOUND ONE WITH A LOVELY LADY IN WHO MADE SOME BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES AND EVEN ADAPTED THEM TO FIT OUR REQUIREMENTS WHICH WAS VERY HANDY. FIVE WEEKS HAS FLOWN BY HOWEVER I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 6 HOURS STOP OVER IN ABU DHABI THAT IS STILL TO COME.

Hope you had a great time in SL
Its fun to read ur blog. Very descriptive. I usually do not subscribe to a blog but yours looked interesting. I wanted to hear what actually a non Sri Lankans experience in Sri Lanka was. Its quite entertaining. Its nice that you have traveled to so many countries. I wish I could join a volunteer association and travel around the world helping locals. Hope you could visit Sri Lanka again. NOTE:- I think the reason the village kids were mischievous bcoz they were too exited to see white people teaching them english not becuase of any disrespect. Thats what the village kids do to get your attentionl they want you to notice them. When they are mischievous it means that they like you. If not they would just sit around quietly and do nothing.
