I got up this morning around 9 o’clock and dilly-dallied around until about 10 o’clock when Dad called. Mom was still in Missouri on her rock trip and Dad had said that she was having a great time, other than some minor setbacks like rain and a flat-tire by one vehicle in the group. Maximus P is doing well. Apparently, he is getting fatter, which is no surprise to me. He’s always been a lovable big boy. My hands have finally healed from his claw marks. He doesn’t mean to, but when he plays, he ends up clawing his playmate to death. I thought about getting a falconer’s glove, but then decided against it since I was leaving anyway. Sorry, Mom and Dad, you can buy the chain-mail mitt if you so desire. Anyway, I talked ... read more

I woke up this morning and talked to Dad. Mom is apparently having a great time in Missouri and has already found some rocks, although it rained on them. We talked for quite a while, but I had to get ready to go because I wanted to head out to Gaeksa today. I got ready and walked to the main street to pick up a cab. I successfully asked for Gaeksa and the cab driver understood. It’s a miracle! So I took a 10 to 15 minute ride, which cost about $4 total. The driver dropped me off across from the Gaeksa house and I attempted to follow the directions I was given. It has started to sprinkle/rain, but it wasn’t enough to warrant me getting out the umbrella. I walked down the street across from ... read more

Today was Friday, so the Kinders were either going to have outside class or there was going to be a birthday party. Well, today was the birthday party for the September birthdays. It was quite strange, actually. We did our morning routine and then around 10:40, we went up to the fifth floor where they pushed back the accordion wall to make one big room out of two smaller classrooms. I had my cookies come in and sit down and I one little girl who is just as stubborn as can be. She won’t talk to me and she is constantly following the Korean teachers where ever they go - including out of the room. So today was no exception. I lost her on the way up. I took the stairs while everyone else was in ... read more

An-nyeong! This morning my Kinders did pretty well. They seem more tame than they did before Chusok. They like to scream when they count numbers or say the alphabet, and it’s annoying, but at least they’re doing it. When I was helping a student, I had another one come up at my side and grab my chest. I moved his hand away and told him, “No,” but that just made it a game. Since it’s Thursday, we had singing time with the other classes in the common room. I think I sang, “Here we go Loo-by Loo” about 500 times. I actually got dizzy from spinning around so many times, but I think the heat also had a lot to do with it, so I decided to quit and just sing along. When the foreign teachers ... read more

Like every day, I had the Kinders this morning. They were pretty tame today. Maybe it was because we were missing two of the rambunctious ones. They wrote, “Shoot a star,” twice and many of them had very good tracing. We still need to work on our fine motor skills, and I guess gross motor skills as well because we trip over our own feet! It’s Thursday, so it was board game day. On these days, I pick out three or so board games from the common room and they make up their own games. Today, while I was out getting the games, I returned to a little boy pants-less on a chair. Apparently he had wet himself and my co-teachers were trying to clean him up. What was also great was that I had bare ... read more

I heard the stock market took a dive yesterday in the States and it was having a ripple effect around the world. Here in Korea, we were having a holiday, so the markets weren’t open. We’ll have to see how it affects us here. So far, we’re stable and actually the dollar has become stronger dropping the Won from 90 cents per dollar to 86 cents per dollar. That’s a pretty good exchange rate! When that happens, I try to use either my VISA card or cash in some travelers’ cheques because I get more bang, I mean Won, for my buck. The Kinders went to Gimshule again today. I didn’t have a child on my lap this time, however I was behind the driver in the van and two little boys were sharing the front ... read more

Today, Monday, I had the day off because of Chusok, the Korean Thanksgiving. I got up around 9 o'clock to talk to Mom and Dad from about 9:15 to 9:45. They gave me updates on Hurricane Ike and what’s going on in the States. I’ve noticed that foreigners who have been here a long time didn’t hear of some events back home and when I mentioned them, they didn’t know what I was talking about. So, I’m doing the best that I can to keep up on things. I try to read the headlines daily, but I want to know local stuff, too, so they fill me in. After we got off of the web cam, I tried to do some writing and then I watched some YouTube and fell asleep for about two hours. Then ... read more

An-nyeong! I was able to sleep in today. Mom and Dad decided to set up a T.V. at home by the web cam so I could watch Saturday Night Live with Michael Phelps. It was fun to get to see English T.V. for once. I have a T.V. here, but I haven’t set it up since Tom says it really doesn’t work and it’s all in Korean anyway. I usually watch YouTube episodes of shows - Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, Golden Girls, etc. I tried to watch my Arrested Development DVDs, but it won’t let me because I’m out of the country. For some reason, it knows and only lets me watch them in the US or Canada. Weird. At least I got to see some funny US humor from noon until 2pm on Sunday. It wasn’t the ... read more

Today I got up around 10am and talked to Mom and Dad back home. They said they were still getting rain from the hurricanes and more was to come. Luckily for me, it hasn’t rained here yet. I’ve had gorgeous days and today wasn’t going to be any different. At 12:20, I met Pauline outside her apartment and we walked to one of the corner stores and picked up some juice for the party. Then we hit up Dunkin’ Doughnuts to get some doughnut holes for dessert. I bought the doughnut holes since I didn’t have anything to bring, and that was fine with Pauline! We then walked over to the corner of Bone Hospital and waited for a small blue car. We talked about many different things and she told me to read a book ... read more

Today was a most exciting day for all of us at the Hogwan. This morning we went to the Korean cultural center and Hanok Village. Most all of the children wore their traditional Korean Hanboks. When we (the foreign teachers) arrived at the school, we went on a quest for our Hanboks because we were supposed to wear them as well, however they were nowhere to be found. Later, Mrs. Ahn said that they were in storage and old and moldy, but we think they probably forgot. It was okay though, because it was pretty hot to begin with without all of the extra layers. I had asked one of the Korean teachers if she was going to wear hers today, and she said, “Oh no, I don’t have one. Too expensive!” That made it sink ... read more
