We drove to Cheorwon, which is really far north. I always think Seoul is really close to the DMZ, but the drive took about an hour and a half. It is further away than it seems. On the drive the city soon gave way to the countryside. It is strange to think that we were so close to North Korea as the area is so peaceful. There were lots of rice fields, Cheorwon is famous for producing high quality rice, and we saw quite a few cranes in the fields. We arrived at the carpark ready to start our hike. The bathroom had hot water in the taps, a rarity in Korea. We walked up a steep hill, along a paved road, through a posh looking camping site to reach the start of the trail. There ... read more

My third visit to Seoraksan National Park! Since I would be leaving Korea soon, I took the opportunity to visit Seoraksan again. The first time I went many years ago, I wasn't really that impressed, but when I visited back in December I realised why everyone falls in love with the place. This trip that I went on gave me the chance to explore a new part of this vast national park. We started at Jangsudae ranger station, which is at the western edge of the park, far from the coast and the main entrance. This trail would take us 11.3 kilometres in a north-west direction to Namgyori park ranger post. We all had to pose with a big banner about not smoking in the national park for the ranger. One of those experiences of living ... read more

We took the subway from Seoul all the way out to Chuncheon. It is great that the Seoul subway system is so extensive and cheap, but it was a long journey. The subway was packed so it was standing room only. I ended up standing the whole way, for an hour and a half. It was nice looking out of the window watching the city turn into countryside. At Namchuncheon Station there was a coach waiting for us. It was nice to finally sit down. We drove through Chuncheon to Uiam Lake. The drive didn't take too long. We sat near the lake and took in the views. It was a glorious day, sunny but with a nice breeze to stop it getting too hot. Since we were a very big group we had to split ... read more

I had visited Odaesan National Park a couple of years ago in the autumn and it became my favourite national park in Korea. It was just so beautiful and the hiking wasn't too difficult. When I saw that there was a winter hike planned I really wanted to go back and experience the park in a different season. We left Seoul early as always. The traffic seemed pretty light, not too many travelling on a random Tuesday, even if it is a holiday. The bus journey wasn't too long maybe two and a half hours. I dozed for most of it. When I woke up properly, I looked out of the window and saw that everything was white. There was so much snow about, I was shocked, I really didn't expect to see that much, as ... read more

19th Dec: We left Seoul around 8 am and headed east to Gangwon-do. I was happy to be getting out of the city and spending the weekend before Christmas somewhere beautiful. We had a couple of stops on the way and we arrived to the area, where we were meant to be hiking. However, luck was not on our side, the trail had been closed as rockfall in the area had made it too dangerous to hike. Time for plan B, we would head to the main part of the national park and do the hike that we were going to do tomorrow instead. We arrived at the main entrance around 11-11:30 am. We headed along the new trail to the waterfall. The trail was only 2.5 kilometres and the slope was very gentle. It was ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gangwon-do » Samcheok July 18th 2015

18th Jul: We had took the late night bus from Seoul the evening before, and had arrived in Samcheok around 2 am. We headed straight to the love motel next to the bus station. I had stayed there a couple of years ago, when I had previously visited Samcheok. Since we had arrived so late, we slept in until quite late. I love how dark the rooms are in love motels, no natural light to interrupt a good sleep. We headed back to the bus station around lunchtime and bought tickets to Jangho. The staff outside were lovely, asking where we were going and telling us where to stand. The bus soon turned up and we were on a proper posh coach, not the crappy public bus. The journey didn't take too long and we were ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gangwon-do » Sokcho June 28th 2014

28th Jun: We left Suwon around eight. The bus journey was long and tedious, it took about four hours. The only highlights were the conversation and passing by the beautiful Seoraksan. We were deposited at Sokcho bus station around midday. Bathrooms are rank. We got a caffeine fix and took a taxi to Naksan beach. The journey took around 15 to 20 minutes and cost around 15,000 won. We were deposited at our motel. We checked in and got the keys for the two rooms. We went and checked them and the room with the extra bedding was for the four of us. We were confused as the rooms were meant to have a kitchen, but we couldn't see it in the room. We scoffed at the size of the wardrobe, it was huge for beach ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gangwon-do » Chuncheon » Nami Island March 29th 2014

We took the shuttle bus from Jamsil at 9:40 am. The bus is easy to book, I think you just ring a number on the Nami Island website, transfer the money and they send you an email receipt, which you give to the bus driver and he gives you your bus and ferry tickets. Our bus driver was worried because we didn't have return tickets, but we explained that we weren't coming back on the shuttle. The bus journey was really quick. I'm sure it only took about an hour. Once we arrived at the ferry terminal, we headed straight to the coffee shop to get our caffeine fixes and have a good natter. We finally managed to drag ourselves away from the cafe, and we got on the ferry to head across to the island. ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gangwon-do » Oak Valley Resort February 15th 2014

15th Feb: We left Jamsil at 9:40, the shuttle bus was on time and it was full. I still can't believe that the bus was free! Yeri was telling us that all the major ski resorts have these free shuttle buses. At times like this I wish I spoke Korean and was able to find out about these offers. The traffic was good and we arrived an hour and forty minutes later. We headed straight to the shuttle bus office to book our return journey for the next day. We were undecided between the 1:00 shuttle, as we thought it would be too early, and the 5:30 shuttle, as we thought it was a bit too late, and what would we do all day. However we opted for the later one as there were buses going ... read more

An early start! We left Seoul before eight am and drove north toward the DMZ. A brief break in Uijeongbu to pick so people pick, I don't think they turned up, and then a shorter drive to our first proper stop of the day. The Battle of White Horse was a series of bloody battles that took place during the Korean War, to gain control of the hilltop positions. Baengma-gji was the peak of the Iron Triangle, formed by Pyeongyang and Gimhwa and Cheorwon were the two points at its base. The hilltop and the surrounding area was very important as a strategic transport route in the central region of the Korean peninsula. During the ten day battle between the South Korean troop and the Chinese the hill changed hands 24 times. That's a bloody lot! ... read more
