The Fullerton Hotel
My favorite looking hotel in Singapore, which used to be the post office. Singapore - Part II
So, despite the long-awaited anticipation, here's the rest of our trip in Singapore...
Day 4: On this beautiful day, we got an early start once again, and this time hopped on the subway train and then a bus - to go to Singapore's famous
Jurong Bird Park. This park was really special because it had a lot of exhibits where you could actually walk right into the environment of the birds and interact with them (feed them, etc.). There were also some shows that we caught that were pretty spectacular. By mid-afternoon, despite all of the mosquito bites I had gotten, we had had a lot of fun there!
After the Bird Park, we journeyed back to the heart of Singapore and got ready to have a nice dinner on Clarke Quay once again. We really wanted to try this restaurant, called
Brasserie Wolf, that we had seen the night before. The menu actually reminded me a lot of NYC restaurants / menus and looked amazing, and the only reason we didn't eat there our first night was because there were no more tables available out on the river. (Hey, for NYC dinner
No Riding
One of the many signs telling you what not to do. prices, I wanna sit out by the freakin' river!) 😊 The food was wonderful.
After dinner, we headed out to the Singapore Zoo for their "Night Safari"...which was definitely a unique experience. Here, it was like being at the zoo at night, only better. When we first arrived there was a fire dance / tribal-like show going on, which we watched for a moment, before boarding safari jeeps to go through the "safari." The coolest thing about this though was that, unlike most zoos, all the animals were in habitats without obvious cages or bars...so as we drove by...sometimes there was only a large ditch separating the ferocious tigers and us! Scary, but cool! And some of the less dangerous animals were in a VERY free environment, and they could just walk right up to our open vehicle! (For example - the taipurs and elephants!) Also, there were some night paths that you could actually get off and walk through, which was even more creepy in the dimly lit park. We never knew what we'd run into! The highlight of the evening (for me anyway), was when we were in the bat cave, and Larry was so intent on
Big fines for violations
You cannot buy or chew gum in Singapore, it's against the law taking a close-up picture of a bat hanging from a piece of fruit on the tree...that he didn't even realize that the bat had flown away, and he was holding up a whole crowd of people to take a really good picture of a piece of fruit on the tree!!! 😊
Day 5: On this day, we started the morning with a "Duck Tour"...the tour that uses a vehicle that acts as both an open bus AND a boat! This tour was really nice...as it hit some of the touristy places we had already been, as well as some new places in Singapore that we hadn't seen yet. Larry even answered the tour guides quiz question correctly, and won me my very own pair of "duck lips" - which was also a duck whistle! 😊
After the tour, we headed over to the bus station area near Little India and Arab Street....and this time boarded a bus to take a little day trip to Malaysia - to a city called Johor Bahru. Conveniently enough, Johor Bahru was VERY close to Singapore - practically right over the border - although we did have to wait in long lines
at the Immigration. Either way, we were really glad we went, as it gave us some more perspective to Singapore. Although neighboring countries, Malaysia was MUCH cheaper and also dirtier than Singapore. On a similar note, they both had a lot of diversity and culture. So, since we only had an afternoon, we had a nice Pakistani lunch at a food court and then did some shopping before heading back. We enjoyed our short time in Malaysia and definitely look forward to going back on our longer SE Asian journey at the end of this year - as we plan to go back to Malaysia to visit Kuala Lumpur and also possibly a beautiful northwestern island called Langkawi.
Well, after we returned from Johor Bahru we were pretty exhausted. So, to commemorate our last night in Singapore we ate at one of our favorite places to eat in Singapore - one of the many delicious food stalls. Here, the food was extremely tasty and yet so very cheap too! I tried a traditional Singaporean breakfast for dinner (since I hadn't had a chance to try one beforehand) - kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and milk tea. I like my eggs
a little more cooked, but other than that, it wasn't too bad. Larry had dim-sum and beer. We will both miss the jasmine green tea that they sold ice cold in bottles at every convenience store in Singapore! If you ever journey there, you HAVE to try it!!
So, that's the end of our Singapore trip. We hope you enjoyed our pictures and stories...
Next up, a blog about Larry's birthday, one about a ferry/caving adventure we went on, and most recently - our weekend trip to N. Korea! Stay tuned... 😊
Hope to hear from you all soon~
Love,
Larry & Melanie
