06/01/08 Days 1-5
We arrived in Singapore at about 3pm, had a total nightmare trying to find some reasonable priced accomodation, everywhere was so expensive, we ended up going to 3 different area's in taxis, the few Guest Houses that were recommended were either fully booked or cost too much, a couple of times we ended up in someones flat that used to be Guesthouses- thats from using a 6 year old book but it was free so can't complain!! Eventually after 4 hours a taxi driver stopped at a Hostel.... yipeeeeeee, and it was really nice, no rooms left for us but we did get a dorm bed for the night before a room became available to us for the next 3 nights. Our roomie is a scottish guy and seems really nice although Emily thinks either his feet or his bag smells like fish tanks!!
We fancied some healthy food so opted for Thai/Chinese, we found a little cheap restaurant (which turned out not to be so cheap) Emily ordered chicken and vegetables but it was more like deep fried chicken skin, and think Brett's was dog- oh well! Cereal for tea back at the Hostel.
We decided to
go our seperate ways today for a couple of hours, well sometimes its needed is'nt it?
Emily went to the Orchard Road to the Chinese gardens, two Art Museams, and looked around a few of the 30ish shopping malls and then went to Raffles Hotel, which is a famous Hotel used by the celebs, it was owned by the English in the early 1900's and has a very English feel to it, there is a museam, a shopping mall and lots of restaurants and a very pretty court yard where you can relax with a drink.
Brett went to the public library- why (he does'nt really know as books are'nt really his thing) then he headed to Raffles himself and did the same things as Em, but what amazed him the most was how pristine the buildings were in Singapore. He spent 15 minuites clocking the cars in the car park at Raffles, there were Bentleys, Ferrari's and Lambuginies mmm dream on!!! He then headed in to the city and walked past the Old Parliament buildings, St Andrew's Cathedral also a beautiful buiding, and the City Hall then he spent the afternoon walking along the Singapore River, where all the
nice bars and restuarants are, after he went to the pictures to watch Alien v Preditor 2 but Emily wasn't too keen so she walked round and had some tea.
After our day apart we both couldn't believe how nice the city was, so picturesque and clean with an English feel to it, maybe because everything is written in English, everyone speaks English, its always cloudy and its rained every day.
We decided to go to the Underwater World Aquarium, which is on Sentosa Island (just off Singapore main Island) we got the underground, a very impressive public transport system, which puts our public transport service in England to shame, it is so clean and immaculate (you would be find $500 for drinking or eating) it was so efficiant to use, Brett said he could have spent all day on it!! hmm
We then had to catch a bus to the Island, passing the Shipping Port with all the Cargo Ships that looked as though they were all queing up to get into port with all there crates of goods, we had heard it was the busiest port in the world and it certainly looked it!
We then got another
bus to the Aquarium, Underwater World was ok but nothing too different to what we had seen before apart from the Dolphin Show and the Dolphins were PINK! but it absolutely belted it down all through the show and all day really, so we decided to go to the pictures again.....we caught the underground again much to Brett's delight, as we wanted to go the the Cinemax- the biggest cinema complex in Singapore. We or Brett picked the film: Darjeeling Express (Owen Wilson) Emily enjoyed it but Brett was'nt too fussed. Afterwards Emily took Brett to Orchard Road for a look at all the expensive shops and Hotels.
Brett then wanted to take Emily to the Clarke Quay (the Singapore River where he went to previous day) to see all the cool bars and restaurants, two of the bars are famous in England; the Penny Black and the Cavern? We sat down to have a drink then made a sneaky escape after seeing the price list ($11 for a glass of wine and $16 for a pint of larger) We walked for nearly 4 hours, passing the Fullerton Hotel and the Cavenagh Bridge, which is the oldest bridge in Singapore
and made from materials all the way from Scotland.
Lots of walking today, but Em made Brett walk to the Hotel after all the take-aways he had been eating, we were going to stop off at Subway but it was shut (bummer) so Brett went to Burger King and Emily had a cup of sweet corn that Brett held then spilt half of it when he slipped on the wet floor, so Em ended up with half a cup of corn (serves her right for making him walk)
Rain....rain and more rain the next day, so not much to tell you, apart from we went to the pictures twice (getting abit embarrassing now, but this was only because it was raining and cheap!) we watched Alvin and the Chipmunks- a classic from our youth, and then Michael Clayton with George Clooney.
On our last day in Singapore the weather picked up so we headed to China Town and the markets, and then to the Japanese Mall before we collected our bags and caught the Underground Train to Changi Airport. We found out on our arrival that we were departing from the new Terminal 3 building of the Airport that had
only been open for 2 days and had been on the news and in all the papers, it was really nice and huge, Emily even managed to get lost for 45 minuites after going to the toilets, Brett waited all that time at the spot she told him to stay, he got that worried that he went to put an announcment on the tannoid but as it was'nt working he sent a lady to search for her after thinking ''she must have collapsed as no-one could get lost going to the toilet??'' (except Emily)
8 hours later we would be in Australia, how exciting.................
