KL city
The view from our guest house 03/01/08 Days 1-3
22 hours and 3 buses later (the map indicates where we had to change) We arrived in Kuala Lumpur the capital city of Malaysia at 4am, not one of our worst bus journeys and the border crossing was easy apart from parting with our money for the fine we got for over staying our visa in Thailand, it made us feel a bit sick but we were expecting it!!
Our hostel is really cute even though our room is more like a shoe box, you couldn't even swing a cockroach in it yet alone a cat!
Here we go.....3 days of non-stop walking and site seeing.....should help shed a few pounds after the christmas 2 week feast!!
The city is beautiful, clean and huge, we ve never been to a city quite like this before and the size of some of the buildings took our breath away.
We walked to the two tallest buildings, which were the Kuala Lumpar Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers and then had a walk around the city.
After some food to refuel, we decided to go up the Kuala Lumpur Tower, which is a communications tower and is the 4th tallest tower
in the world, standing at 421 metres. We went up to the observational deck using the lift that took us 58 seconds to get to 281 metres (lots of ear popping on the way up)
The tower also houses a revolving restuarant, shops, fast food outlets and even a zip line, its surrounded by tropical gardens, which we planned to walk round but we spent that long in the tower, that they had shut by the time we came down.
The views we got from the observation deck were amazing, like nothing we ve ever experienced, Brett even felt dizzy from the hight we were at. We got binoculars and a video with headsets telling you about the views and the history of the tower. Altogether we spent nearly 3 hours up there, think Brett was too scared to come down in the lift really so was making out he wanted to look through the binoculars again!!
We went to look at the tree that was 100 years old and had been saved from being destroyed when the tower was built, when a chef came out of one of the kitchens with some crisps in his hand and about 12
monkeys appeared from out of the trees, they were so cute and friendly, we bought some peanuts and fed the monkeys, they held on to our fingers and picked the nuts out of our hands, we even had them drinking water from the palms of our hands, unbelievable, never been so close to wild monkeys, 2 were carrying babies and 1 baby was bright orange, all the rest was grey, really funny to see!
We walked around Little India and China Town, really interesting to see all the different cultures of the malaysians and how different they look from one another.
Hard Rock Cafe was our choice for tea and what a choice it was. To walk off our food we went to see the Petronas Twin Towers by night all lit up, they looked spectacular, spectacular ''what a building'' we spent about 3 hours there whilst Brett tried to figure out the best setting to use on his camara. Back to our shoe box for some sleep.
The next morning we went to the Petronas Twin Towers but we were unable to go to the Sky Bridge as there are only a limited number of tickets each day and
they had all gone, no charge on the tickets but it is a first come, first served basis and we couldnt even book them for the day after, considering it was 10am we thought we would be ok but we were told to get there for 8am. Oh wow.......we looked around the shopping mall that was INSIDE the towers, it had every shop imaginable (designer shops, that is ladies)
Em was starting to hyperventilate with all the fantastic shoes and bags so Brett took her to walk around the gardens and the water features at the back of the towers.
We needed to book our bus ticket to Singapore so we walked to the bus station next to China Town so had another look at this by day. More WALKING to Times Square, which is another mall but in this one there is a indoor theme park complete with a roller coaster. We went for lunch at a Sushi Bar (not MacDonalds) octapus legs and raw cuttle fish, yum yum!! well theres a first and last time for everything!!
We even went bowling in the mall, and more window shopping before our knees were buckling.
The easiest way to get
around the city is on the Sky Line (Mono Rail) we decided to take a rest and have a trip to the end of the line and back, good fun as neither of us have been on one before! Just made it indoors for a drink before a massive thunder storm hit the city, ''hhmm what for tea tonight Em?"
"mmmmm Nandos"
We were up bright and early to get to the twin towers for 8.30am, after queing for nearly 2 hours we managed to get our tickets for the 1.15pm slot. With some time to kill we had a look round the exhibition centre, where we learnt lots of facts and information on the construction of the towers, we learnt that the towers are not only the tallest TWIN BUILDINGS in the world, but the 2nd tallest BUILDING in the world, losing their top spot in 2003. Both towers are 88 storys high and 452 metres above street level. Unfortunatly tourists/visitors are only permitted to go up to the sky bridge (which is the highest bridge in the world standing at 170 metres) The bridge is double decker and built on floors 41 and 42, the lower level is
for tourism and the upper level is for staff. Before we were allowed on the bridge we had to watch a short documentry (like a tacky school science film!!), we were given some 3D specs which looked hilarious, especially when the man sat next to Brett put them over his own glasses!! It was really interesting to go up to the bridge although we had spoilt ourselves by going up the KL Tower first, also once up there you're only allowed 10 minutes before you have to go back down but its well worth it.
After we had a nice walk around the garden and recreational area before Emily dragged Brett back into the mall for more window shopping until we came across a cinema, ar something we had'nt done for quite a while, so we watched National Treasure 2 with Nicolas Cage, then after some food we went back to watch another one as we were sick of walking, I Am Legend with Will Smith was our 2nd choice, both films were excellent. Back to the shoe box for some more relaxation before catching the 9am bus to Singapore, our last bus ride in Asia to go with our
last destination...... to sum Kuala Lumpur up- WHAT A PLACE!!!
