We had heard lots of good reports from fellow travellers about Singapore Zoo and decided to dedicate a day to it. We weren't disappointed in the slightest!!
We caught the MRT to a station near the Kranji War memorial, where the name of my grandfathers brother was engraved in memory of this loss during the war. As we exited the railway station, the heavens opened. There was no shelter close by, so we darted for the nearest bus stance. The rain didnt seem to be passing so we jumped on a bus to the War memorial as we wanted to ensure that we had enough time for the zoo. It was nice to see that the War memorial and graveyards were kept so well, with numerous gardeners working hard as we walked around. Although I did get a few strange looks from them but I am sure that was because I had my Scotland poncho on in an attempt to protect me from the rain. Unfortunately I think the poncho had seen better days and I had to end up giving it up.
Back on the MRT and a short bus journey later and we arrived at Singapore Zoo!!
We bought a combo ticket which gave us access to the both the Zoo and the Night Safari.
The Zoo was amazing and we got to see many gorgeous animals up close!! The white tigers were amazing and perhaps my favourite. Unfortunately we did not get to touch these ones!! hehe!! In many parts of the Zoo we were walking around amongst the animals and a few cheeky monkeys came out of nowhere to see if we had anything interesting for them. It wasn't like any other zoo we'd ever been to as it was mostly all open and it felt like there was a lot more interaction.
The Zoo is set out really well into different areas, during our time in the "Australian Outback" we got to hand feed and clap the kangaroos which was really good!! One of them was quite greedy and took a liking to my hand after the food was finished!! If I didnt get more food to him quick enough he pawed me as if to say hurry up!!
We managed to catch a couple of shows, the first was the "Elephants of Asia" where we saw some fantastic acrobatics from
the elephants, and an insight into how the elephants worked and communicated with humans. Althought they are very big and strong animals they can also be very gentle. Next we caught the water show with sea lions and penguins. These shows were not just about watching the animals do tricks, they were very informative and educational, giving details about how the animals hunt and live.
Time was running away from us and we wanted to make sure that we got to see everthing the zoo had on offer, so the last half hour we spent rushing around the few remaining attractions. We ended up cramming in giraffes, lions, leopards, snakes, rhinos, zebras, orangutangs, chimps, monkeys, hippos, cheetas, crocodiles, amphibians (various types) and pretty much anything else you can think of. It was really fun. When 6pm came we were both starving and exhausted so we headed for something to eat and a bit of relaxation before the Night Safari started.
As we waited to enter the Night Safari, we managed to get our photos taken with a few of the animals, an owl, wild cat and snake!! I refused to touch the snake as it was huge and
I nearly jumped 3 feet into the air when it moved towards me!! Gary on the other hand couldnt wait to touch it and was disappointed that they didnt put it around his neck!! Lets just say I was more than relieved!!
The night safari started off with a show, with numerous different types of animals coming out from all over the ampitheater, it was amazing to see although we were unable to get any good pictures as camera flashes could not be used. The commentator was hillarious and very informative, the staff here really knew the animals and also had their best interests at heart.
Following the show, we caught the safari trams around the park which is kept very like the animals real life habitats without fences. It was really strange seeing the animals at night and some people on the tram were a bit scared at times as the animals were very close and you didnt know what was around the corner.
We were also able to explore areas of the Night Safari by foot and got to cross a suspension bridge to look down onto the tigers giving a much better view of
??
Can't remember what these were called. them.
We both had a great day and would highly recommend the Zoo and Night Safari to anyone who visits Singapore. We were both exhausted and after a short bus and MRT journey back to our hostel we collapsed in bed and fell deep into a sound sleep.
