Friday I wake up at 5 am & find the power is back on, including wifi! Able to clean out my email and chat with Nikki on FB. Find out Moose is being the best Uncle Moose in the whole world while he babysits Aria. Strangely, while on the internet I lose track of time (gee, that never happened before) and all of a sudden realize I only have an hour until my ride to the airport. No time for breakfast, but I'm still not hungry. Repack my suitcase to be stored at the Norbu Linka while I'm off to Lumbini. Have a little chat in the lobby with a Korean guy from New York. This is his 5th trip to Nepal and he had to cut short his trek due to altitude sickness, first time ... read more

Day 40 Varanasi to Lumbini (12th Aug) So today was another early start, as we have a border crossing into Nepal. We are all ready for a change now, too. Hoping for a bit of R&R in Nepal. So as we were about to leave Varanasi at 0700, LJ (our tour leader, for those who forgot) jumps onto the coach and in the space of less than 2 minutes, informs us that he has a family emergency and will be leaving us today, we will be met at the Nepal border by our Nepal Guide and have to otherwise manage by ourselves in Nepal, that Ozbus will be in touch with us, nice to meet you and goodbye. It was so sudden that everyone was in shock. We all sort of looked at each other as ... read more

Feels like we're needing to play catch-up here on the postings: for a while we were away for internet... and now in a town where it's very expensive or very far away. We spent our last day in Varanasi enjoying the hospitality of Raj (my old music teacher) & his family as they gave us a place to stay and keep our luggage after we checked out of our hotel. We were so excited to be able to commute to the railway station late at night in order to avoid the nightmare of traffic we had at mid-day on the way in. The train station was bustling with many people sleeping on the ground --likely because of all the late train announcements we were hearing. It's now 2 days before Holi (which has the same grandeur ... read more

Xmas Day was an early start as we had several hours drive to the Nepal border. We crossed at Sounali then styaed in Lumbini that night. Great trip through the countryside, but fairly slow as usual- its difficult to get up to 40km per hour, with the state of the back roads, the number of villages to go through (every few kilometres, and the ever present buffalo, goats etc on gthe roads (not to mention the fact that even onb the highways, no one turns a hair if someone drives down the road on the wrong side - its sometimes just the quickest way to get through!...Anyway, we just love all of this, particularly the country roads...and it was clear that hardly anyone seems to use the roads we were on, because we didn't see a ... read more

Day 527: Tuesday 8th December - Travelling on the roof of the bus to Buddha’s birthplace We leave our relaxing surroundings in Sauraha and the friendly staff of the Chitwan Forest Resort behind and take a four and a half hour bus ride to Bharairawa, to the west and just a few kilometres from the Indian border. India can wait until tomorrow, we still have one more day on our visa so therefore we still have time to see Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, and one of four sacred Buddhist sites in the world (the other three are in India). The bus to Bharairawa initially consists of mainly tourists as it leaves Sauraha but soon fills to bursting. It isn’t the most comfortable of rides. The next bus ride between Bharairawa and Lumbini is equally as ... read more

We got a night train from Varanasi to Gorakpur (north India, on our way to the boader with Nepal). The people in Varanasi train station must have know we were to be leaving India because they pulled out all the stops to give us an extra 'special' send off......late train, begging by the poorliest children we've ever seen, so much staring, drunks, people wanting photos of us, constant ''hello, where are you from?''.....we were even sketched by somone. We were warn out afterwards! 3 hour chicken bus north from Gorakpur to Sunauli, the boarder town between India and Nepal. It's like a big truck stop so we didn't linger. Got stamped out of India by the arrogant, sour faced Indian Immigration Officials and then stamped into Nepal by the smiling, welcoming Nepalese Immigration Officials......we liked Nepal ... read more

We left Tansen by hire taxi for the three hour trip to Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, and a tiny town close to the Indian Nepal border. The trip was stunning - traveling along the edge of some very deep gorges lined with rice terraces and jungle. The road was pretty bad in places - there were a lot of washouts and areas of landslide. We passed hundreds of buses - one after the other - and I've never seen buses as crowded before. Everybody was heading home for the Dasian celebrations and all the buses had at least a dozen or more young men perched on top of the luggage on the roofs. They all waved frantically when they spotted us - I was waiting for somebody to topple off! Lumbini was very tiny ... read more

A knock on the door awoke us around midnight. Myself and my roommate both being slightly anxious about opening a door to some random knocker in the middle of the night, hid behind the toilet door for protection (it seemed a good idea at the time) as we called out asking who it was. It was Javed our tour leader, calling an emergency meeting. We instinctively thought we were in trouble, and were about to be told off and kicked off the tour in front of the whole group - how humiliating! Lucky for us we weren't busted for some unfortunate travel crime, instead we were told Maoist rebels had called a strike in our area and we had to get out straight away. We packed in record time and within 15 minutes we were in ... read more

4 Jan - extremely long day of driving on the bus to reach the India / Nepal border crossing at Bhairawa. Decide to get one month visa. Seen as when I left home I never expected to be coming to Nepal I may as well make the most of this extra country! Visa process and border crossing straight forward and quick. 5 Jan - cannae believe I'm in Nepal. So far however it seems the same as Northern India...ie shrouded in mist. This morning we board our colourful bus, it's a real life Nepali style bus, check out the photos below! Today we drive to Lumbini, another of the 4 important sites in Buddhism. Lumbini was the birthplace of Gautama, Lord Buddha in approximately 500BC. As well as visiting his birthplace, the area is a tranquil ... read more

Hello everyone, sorry it's been such a long time since I blogged last. I have been very busy and moving around a lot and it has been hard to find places with the internet. Lumbini was a very spiritual place for Buddhists as Lord Buddha was born there. The city contain lots of Temples and monestaries from different countries around the world. I didn't have enough time to see them all, but I did manage to see the Mayanmar (Burma) temple, Korean, Japanese, German, French and Thai temples. It was very interesting and extremely beautiful. I stayed in a guest house in a little village outside of the main city. The owner was very hospitable and cook me dinner. A traditional Nepalese dinner is called a Thali. This contains a little rice, dhal (lentils), veg, lime ... read more
