Dubai sure was a great trip!!! Amazing the archetecture there and the amount of money that comes and goes through that country. On our second to last day, we took a very long walk along the beach park to watch the sunset and during our walk back we were just following the main roads. We had no idea where the bus stops where because of the road construction that is going on there and all of the bus stop signs had been removed (builing an underground tunnel system that should open in 2009)... Anway, we came across one of the nicest guys walking along the street. I stopped and asked him for directions, he was very helpful and informative about the area. So, if you are ever in Dubai, you can do us a favor... if you come across a tall Middle Eastern man with dark skin, dark hair, and a mustache named Nasceem, tell him that "Don and Jenny say thanks", he'll know exactly what you mean!
Today, we made it to Kathmandu, safely!!! Seems like the guns that Don got us, we didn't end up needing, lucky for the other guys! We flew this morning at 4:45 am
ABC on our way.
We are going up there! Day 4. from Dubai to New Delhi. Arrived about 9am, they had the hardest time trying to understand that we did not want to go into India and that we were only at the airport as a transport/layway for our next flight. They had to track down our luggage (we couldn't touch it, fearing that we would contaminate it or add things too it without taking us back through security). There was a luggage carrier that had to "guard" our luggage. He was very interesting... pacing back and forth, stairing at his watch, trying to get us transported to our next terminal (which we had to be escorted to up one flight of stairs and through a guarded door)... we waited for this 2 minute long escort for almost 70 minutes. Quite rediculous... like India has never had two people enter their airport and choose not to exit it. Oh well, we found it quite comical. The 1:15 pm flight over was only three hours, but we lost time in the air crossing time zones. I (Jen) slept most of the way, so the plane ride was, once again, very quick. No frills on this ride (you entertain yourself with what you
Himalaya
Quick Lunch Break, we are almost there. Day 6. brought with you). The plane was relatively empty, many empty seats. Not many travelers coming through because of the riots and protests on the streets with the King.
So, when we arrived (about 4pm today), we asked around and everyone has told us that the King has surrendered and given into the people for a Democratic society. The Nepalese people now need to make up new laws, vote for new leaders, and set thier own rules. It is a huge step for this country! We were very lucky that all of this got resolved last night, before we arrived. So, when the plane flew over Nepal, I was keeping my eye out for riots and fires and who knows what else... but there was none, much to our surprise and happiness.
What this all means is that we will be able to continue our trip as planned. We fly out tomorrow morning at 9:30 am from Kathmandu to Pohkara. Stay the night, then first thing from Pohkara to Jomsom and start the major trek then. We will be in the mountains for about 11-13 days, depending on if we make a rest day or not. We trek from
ABC - Annapurna Base Camp
Sun Rise at ABC. Now, lets get down and go to the BEACH!!! Jomsom to the Annapherna Base Camp and back to Pohkara. Our next step will be to fly out of Pokhara to either Kathmandu or to Bangkok, Thailand, all on May 12th. Then we will go to the Full Moon party on May 13th on the Koa Samui island in Thailand.
So, if you don't hear from us for a couple of weeks, it is because there is no electricity and we are in the mountains of Nepal. I say to check back with us for updates on our trip when we find our next computer, around the 11th or 12th of May, in some airport somewhere.
It is 10:30 pm, have some last minute things to do before we head out in the morning, we Good night to all. Also, thanks for everyone leaving us emails about the weather back home. We were a little bummed about missing the last mandatory Friday at the Heave, but from the sounds of it... you guys were the ones missing out on the blue skies and awesome weather in Chamonix. We had a great last day on the slopes. We hit up three different ski resorts on our last day, ending with our favorite Le Grande Montet. Keep in touch and keep the messages coming, we appreciate to know how all of you are doing also.
We'll chat with you guys as soon as we can. (Jen)
