Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

Hey Guys! I am in Kathmandu! I managed to give myself food posioning the day I got here, so this blog is slightly delayed. Silly me, I thought if my stomach could handle anything in China I could eat salad in Nepal. How wrong I was! Anyway all better now :-) So a recap of what has happened between Lhasa and here. After nearly two weeks in the car, 4 days in Lhasa was a welcome relief. The first 2 days were free days and I enjoyed sleeping in, taking hot showers and walking around the Bangkor area. The area is [View Full Entry]

Good Day We arrived in Delhi from Haridhwar at 12pm. After visiting Karol Bagh we retired to our hotel for the next leg of our travel. We had to get up early at 2.30am on Monday morning to get ready to be at the airport by 4.35am to catch our plane to Nepal which is an hour away from Delhi. We arrived at Kathmandu at 9.55am on a rainy morning and after clearing customs, visa and health check we were met at the airport by our travel agent who garlanded and ensured that all our luggage was taken care of for [View Full Entry]

Kathmandu, Nepal: It's shockingly underdeveloped i.e. unpaved roads, mandatory sporadic daily blackouts, extreme poverty (mostly children on the streets), road kill being cooked on the side of the road, aggressive monkeys, wild dogs, civil unrest (it seems to follow me wherever I go), hygienic uncertainty, plumes of dust, cows grazing in the streets, a lacking infrastructure... all this within the capital city limits of Kathmandu! Upon my arrival, there were children running around the tarmac and the recently parked wheels of the 747 I was stepping off of. The airport building wasn't much [View Full Entry]

Monkey on a Wall.
Typical Street Scene.

I was fortunate to find an affordable volunteer program in Nepal which I participated in for one month as an English teacher. I say "affordable" because in today's 'Brave New World' it's all business, and most programs' weekly prices are equivalent to an all-inclusive week vacation in the Caribbean. So much for "volunteering" in the traditional sense of the word. Even though they had medical assignments, I decided to play teacher. Since I never did it before, it sounded like an interesting challenge. So, for four weeks I divided my time between a rural farming village lost to the recesses [View Full Entry]

After a really great send off in England and Sweden I set off on my long journey for Nepal. I had to fly via Hong Kong so had to go way past Nepal to then fly 5 hours back in the opposite direction. Due to a change in the flights it was a really tight connection and although I made it my bags didn't :( I am now reunited with my backpack but it took a few days and meant that I had to hang out here in Kathmandu for a bit longer than expected. It was all a bit of [View Full Entry]

I am midwife to a birth. Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamal
Yep you read that correctly, although its not actually as dramatic as it sounds. Packing up to leave the hotel I threw back the bedspread to check I had packed everything (sensible Rachel, you have learnt well) to find the hotel cat lying there in the process of having 5 kittens. Much hullaballoo, the maids came in and most of the group. The maids said this was a very auspicious sign that the cat had chosen my bed and I would probably be having children soon myself. Eh?!!! What?!!!!!!Now gentle reader I am aware that this is disturbing news for some [View Full Entry]

Namaste! Have arrived in Kathmandu, feeling quite jet lagged and spacey. It's same vibrant, colourful, dusty, bustling place as ever and managed to find Brian and the group that I am walking with. There are about 15 of us (!) and they're mostly Scottish and very nice. We'll see what happens at altitude!!! And now I'm sheltering in an internet cafe in Thamel (kathmandu region), someone is smoking a joint just outside, not that I'm sheltering from that, but from the most massive thunderstorm and rainstorm. Hope not a harbinger of things to come!!! (I've come on holiday by mistake....are y [View Full Entry]

Loads to talk about but owing to a slight hiccup, basically the electricity is restricted to 4 hours a day and a change of plan in having to fly to Kathmandu rather than bus it, we haven't at the moment got the facility to write much now. However, here are some photographs to go on with and if we cannot write tomorrow, 13th March, it will be a week or so before we can do anymore as we shall be walking the highlands of the Himalaya! The boss from the trekking company was there to meet us from the flight which was really nice and took us to the hotel where we could try to make our backpacks as light as possible to start trekking!! The next day we had a whirlwind tour of the major sights of the city which was ace. We saw the main buddhist temple with all its prayer flags and the cool eyes. We got to visit a painting school which was fun to see although i think 120 usd for a piccie is horribly steep!!! We also went to Durbar square [View Full Entry]
