Last summer a friend asked me if I'd be interested in going to Nepal. 'Of course,' I said. Who wouldn't be interested in going to Nepal? So we planned this trip for April and I have finally arrived! I arrived last night after an uneventful flight. I waited in line for almost an hour to get my visa (25USD). Ravi, my tour organizer, met me at the airport with quite an entourage - himself, a driver, and my guide, Nabin. (www.adventurediscoverytreks.com) Only I didn't know Nabin was going to be my guide. I was taken directly to my hotel which was in the tourist area of Kathmandu called Thamel. I saw a lot of stuff I'd like have while looking through the window of that car. I think my hotel was called Hotel Buddha. It was ... read more

Geo: 27.673, 85.4279 I decided to head off to Bhaktapur for a couple of days! Packed my wee day sack and went for the local bus at Ratna Park. Only 22Rs which is nothing to get here and the whole bus told me when it was time to get off!! I paid 1100Rs which is fairly steep for my ticket into Durbar Square but I did get them to validate it for one week as I'm going to stay overnight at least. I find it very similar to both Kathmandu and Patna's Durbar Square although the buildings are fantastic they all have the same theme. Braktapur has lots of interesting wee backstreets and really is a fascinating place all round but realistically though I have come in search for the Potters Square, which I am dying ... read more

For our last weeks in Nepal, to avoid any more high risks, we decided to put our bags in more or less safe places. First on our route was Lumbini. There are a few dangers that await travelers on the road. First is the bus that brings you from point A to point B. Without a vehicle, you are rather helpless here, you need wheels to move. Busses are old and creaky, and do not look like they will last long. It is quite normal that in a 6 hour journey, the driver will stop a couple of times by a road repair shop to pump a tire or tighten some screws. It seems that there is no technical control nor normes to follow for this type of transport. A lot of buses are private, as ... read more

Ok, so this blog entry is rather outdated now as we visited Bhaktapur 3 weeks ago now, but I thought I'd write about that weekend. Bhaktapur is one of the older parts of Nepal, it is preserved as an historic city and so we spent most of the weekend wandering around the narrow streets and looking at the wide collection of temples and shrines both in Durbar Sqaure and the surrounding streets. (Durbar just means palace, so the Durbar Square is where the old palace used to be - there are a number of them around Nepal, so far the one in Bhaktapur is one of three I have visited, and it is sort of my favourite!) There were a number of huge temples with impressive statues in the square, but there was enough space between ... read more

As we promised last time, we will tell you more about Tihar, the festival that took place from 4th to 7th of november. On fifth, there was Laxmi-puja. Everybody burns lots of oil-candles (and nowadays also more and more colorful electric lights, like we use in Christmas-time) around the house. This happens when sun is going down so it creates a very nice atmosphere in the city. In the same time, girls are dressed up and go dancing and singing in front of shops, so they will receive some money and sweets. We also made a nice colorful flower in front of the house, and a line going inside the house. This because Laxmi (the goddess) can find the way to our moneybag (people believe that she will come either to take money, or to bring ... read more

The last stories and pictures we sent you, were about our wedding. It’s already about weeks ago and since then, we kept on enjoying our stay in Nepal. We went to Eline and Chiniya’s wedding party, which we enjoyed a lot. The day after, we woke up early to make a hiking trip to Namobuddha, a nice Buddhist-monastery in the hills. Gyanendra burnt a candle for good luck, we hope it will work! One of the next days, we went to the swimming pool in Bhaktapur with all the kids of the close family. Since the entrance fee is quite high, there are only a very few swimmers and it’s a real adventure for the kids who cannot go often. They enjoyed it, and of course also the drinks and food afterwards. More happiness those days, ... read more

The 3th day of our wedding, there was a big party (for about 700 people) in the evening. But in the morning, we were also busy: there was another program at Gyanendra's, to introduce Zoe to his family. First there was a small program (Lakha Mata) with the priest. The priest was blessing us for a healthy and succesfull long term relationship. Besides that, 125000 candle-threats were blessed. Those were made by Gyanendra's mother, to burn in this special day. After this, all Gyanendra's family members came for another nut ceremony (like there was in the 2nd day for Zoe's family). One by one they greated us, gave some money and received the nuts. When everybody had done this, we could start another parade to the temple. The candle-threats were carried, a music band was joining ... read more

The second day of our wedding was a very busy and exciting day. In Nepali culture, man and wife don’t live together before they get married. After the marriage, the wife will be living in the family of the man. So during the wedding celebration, the man comes to the house of the woman to get her and bring her to his own house. This was what happened on october 18th. In the morning all family and friends gathered at Gyanendra’s house, while Zoe was in the house of Gyanendra’s sister (for a few hours ‘Zoe’s house’), waiting for Gyanendra. They came in a parade, Gyanendra in a nice car and the others walking, joined by a music band. Zoe heard them from far away, but wasn’t allowed to look through the window, so curiosity was ... read more

Because there is so much to tell and to show about our wedding and because every day was so different, we will write and show pictures day by day. So we will start by the first day, the Swaymber-day, the day that we celebrated at the temple. After getting dressed at the temple, together with Eline and many other family-members, it started by Zoe who had to make three rounds around the place of the celebration, where were sitting Gyanendra's parents and the priest. This happened by carrying the garlands for Gyanendra, follewed by putting the garlands around his neck. Gyanendra soon did the same (except making the rounds), and also had to put a golden hanger. This was followed by exchanging the wedding-rings. After that, Gyanendra had to put coloured powder in Zoe's hair. In ... read more
