The Nepali view the Trans-Himalaya, the high altitude passes and valleys of the world's highest mountain range, with a great deal of reverence. Here the sun will burn exposed flesh within a few minutes, the wind can gust over 100 mph in the afternoons, and snowstorms can appear out of thin air. Someone flown in from sea level to a place like Thorung La (5416 M, 17800 feet) would die from lack of o... Read Full Entry

From upper pisang there is a low road and a high road to Manang. I chose the high road for the views.

Day 6 was one of my favorite days of the trek. The views along the high road to Manang were stunning all day long.

I decided to stay the 6th night at Ngawal at nearly 12000 feet in elevation. It was around this elevation that it started to get really cold.

I arrived in Ngawal early and decided to take a day hike up to 14000 feet. This is about the highest altitude found in the continental US.

This is about the highest altitude here that can support plant life. Above 4300m/14000 feet the landscape is rocky and barren.

On day 7 I head to Manang, located at 3540/11500 feet. This was a very short day and was mostly spent heading downhill. Most trekkers spend two nights here to acclimate to the altitude before moving on, but because I stayed at the higher Ngawal the night before I only stayed one night. I experienced no altitude related problems during this trek.

On day 8 I leave Manang to head to Tilicho Lake Base Camp - a 3 day side trip from the main route.

The trail to Tilicho Lake is much more rugged and technically challenging than the main route around Annapurna.

The trail to Tilicho Base Camp crosses several landslide areas. There is a lower and upper path to the Camp.I opted for the lower because I didn't feel sufficiently acclimated for the high route, but after experiencing unstable slopes I vow to take the upper trail on the way back.

Yaks are common above 10000 feet in elevation. I discovered that Yak cheese is delicious, but Yak meat leaves a lot to be desired.
