Sunset on Coral Beach
one of the many amazing shots i got of the sunsets on coral beach Well after the sights of Railay we set off on a boat and bus combo! unfortunately we had to get up at 5 or something like that and i wasnt feeling too fresh when i got up, anyway we made it to the meeting point with no one in sight . Eventually after a hour or so the woman we booked it with arrived saying because the tide was in we couldnt move the boat as it was stranded on the sand??????hmm surely they would know what time the tides come in and out and so plan to have the boat further out???? oh well after another age of waiting she finally arranged someone to meet pick us up and then we set off to get the bus.
We caught the bus no problem, well when i say bus i mean mini bus crammed full of people, no rest would be had here i thought to myself. Well no rest was caught and one of the reasons was the impending risk we could be under with the thi military everywhere looking rather on edge holding machine guns with road checks every 10 miles. I had read about the problems in
The hostel in Khota Baru
This was the second time around in my favourite room with no windows. the south of thailand before i left and did feel slightly worried as to the climate of fear we live in today.
Anyway we fianlly made it to the not very pretty border and felt slightly uneasy with alot of people watching us but me made it through and waited for a bus to Khota Baru. We finally made it there and picked up some strange malaysian guy who assured us he was a good guy and wasnt trying to scam us.....'not like the thai's' he told us. Well with that in mind we ignored him anyway and found a hostel, which was nice enough for paul and laura in there own room and me in my dorm room with no windows....ahh it wasnt that bad i actually slept ok apart fro the wierd american guy making noises.
Thursday 10th August Well the next day we were up early again to get to the perhentians with the lonely planet telling us we might have trouble finding accomodation we got slightly worried and knew we needed to get there early. And when we did my first thought was this is the clearest water i have ever scene it
Gordon Gecko
My landlord and good friend Gordon. really was immaculate and surely amazing for snorkelling!
Well once again i let paul and laura hunt down a place to stay whilst i sat in a bar drinking lime juice whilst watching a programme on singapour (a future destination). Two hopurs later they came bck with tall tales of horrible places and horribly expensive places but we did find a place on coral beach the other side of the island which we had to cross a mini jungle to get to, containing huge monitor lizards and vipers. On the way there we did spot a monitor lizard but they are harmless although huge. Well the place was nice enough a shack to myself and on first inspection seemed nice although i did notice bat droppings....or what seemed to be bat droppings on my windowsill in the bathroom, ahh what the hell they will keep the bugs away.
Anyway that day we hit the beach having to walk all of about 20 yards to get there.....unfortunately there is a reason the beach we were staying on was called coral beach.....yep the water was unswimmable and full of coral oh well the beach was nice enough and after my
The Baracuda
My favourite bar tangle with coral on Ko Tao i knew i didnt want to rip my feet open again on it.
Well after a day on the beach i headed back to the shack for a shower and read and a nap, and when i headed to the shower i got my first glimpse of my good friend gordon....gordon gecko who was sharing the room with me or at least i was lodging with him........and his family. Yep the bat droppings werent bat droppings but Gecko droppings and when i went to the shower i could se him watching me through the cracks in the walls it was like a scene from psycho. Well at least he would help me keep the bugs out me and gordon v millions of antys and mosquitos and whatever the island could throw against us. Other problems ith my nice little shack started to become apparent then, firstly my mosquito net had holes in, and my door didnt lock!
That night we decided to go to the otherside of the island a 10 minute walk through the jungle which was ok at day but armed only with my small torch we set off. No problems
on the way there and so we sat down and enjoyed a nice bbq with me enjoying a bit of kingfish with jacket potatoe and corn on the cob. Well we enjoyed our mealed and sat and listened to the idiots around us talking utter nonsense like how great the word epic is and how it is so 'old school'? Well anyway after them racially abusing all people on the planet they left and so did our entertainment for the night. Me Pau;l and L:aura then strolled along the beach stopping off for twix shakes here and there due to the problem of alcohol being frowned upon in malaysia.
Anyway we decided it was time to head back hoping my torch wouldnt fail us which it did a few times. Me and Paul led the way with sticks in hand and stomping all the way singing mary poppins songs and other hits of the day trying to make as much noise as possible, it worked unti lthe jungle decided it wanted to be noisier as a chorus of insct noises rained back at us. Nearing camp i started to think of the blair witch film and started to get a bit nervy but we finally made it through with no problems apart from our nerves being shot!
Never again was Lauras statement i believe and so that was the end of our night jungle trwecking for the time being.
Friday 11th August The next day i awoke late and met up with Paul and laura on the beach and lazed the day away on long beach on the other side of the island. Which was good apart from a idiot with a guitar trying to get everyone to listen to him. That night we had another bbq and sat on the beach watching a amazing sunset and afterwards the stars.
Saturday 12th August The next day we went snorkelling but ended up being very dissapointed due to the problems of the goggles leaking and my flippers being too small and so cutting my feet to bits, also although the water being amazingly clear it still wasnt as good as Ko Tao as the coral and the fish were closer there here you had to dive down a fair bit. Although we did see a shark which paul asked whether it was dangerous or not to which the guide just told us that they dont like humans but eat burger king. We also saw some huge turtles which were truly amazing. unfotunately i felt rather ill and so my enjoyment of the snorkelling was rather hampered that on top of the leaking goggles and the flippers ripping my feet to shreds it could have been better.
Sunday 13th August The next morning we decided to leave as the weather looked rather shit and it was time to move on....i exceptionally happy due to the fact that the gecko poo was getting rather too much to handle and meant me not being able to venture into the toilet which created problems for the next week or so, i will leave it at that😊.
Anyway we set off on the speed boat fearing for our lives and particularly our bags as the driver thopught it would be funny to go as fast as possible racing other boats on the way.
Well after that we headed back to Khota Baru.
