Kapalai and Sipadan

Kapalai Resort

Pick up from Tawau airport on Sabah and transfer to Semporna by bus followed by a rough boat ride to Kapalai resort.
But it's well worth the trip, this is paradise on the sea!
Beautiful stilted bungalow resort, each with a very private seaview terrace and bathroom. Klas says it must be the best view ever while having a dump - he even saw a turtle come up for air!
Great lounge areas too, and a real mix of nationalities, which is entertaining at times and worrying at others.....

The dive team are professional and experienced. Our package includes three accompanied dives per day, two off Sipadan and one of Kapalai or nearby Mabul, as well as unrestricted diving from the jetty. Three dives a day is quite enough though, we're normally exhausted afterwards and it's nice to do some snorkelling right by the resort.
We were worried about diving conditions before arriving, as we'd heard it the seas were rough and visibility bad, but so far we've been really happy.
We've seen ”awesome” numbers of big fish like shark, turtles, barracuda, tuna, grouper and trevally as well as masses of colourful reef fish, squid, eels, nudibranches.
Alex has turned into quite the amateur photographer and sometimes it feels like the boys are yo-yos, darting up and down chasing fish! They need to work on their bouyancy control as well.....

The sunsets are pretty nice here too, nothing beats sitting on the deck watching the sun go down with a glass or two of wine. Could do this a while longer....

We are rudely woken up by a storm brewing at 5 am on Sunday, just an hour or two before our speedboat transfer to the mainland. Klas goes green purely at the thought of doing the crossing in rough seas but thanks to an extra dose of seasickness tablets we make it over in one piece, albeit a bit wet.
