My legs hurt...thought my knees were going to be shot from the climb down but instead it's my calves and quads. On the way down we passed local "porters" carrying up to 45kg on their backs up the mountain - old ladies and old men included. The calves on some of them would've put a bodybuilde to shame..now I know why. Our guide told us that many of these "porters" did this every single day. When I walk it looks as though I need to change my underwear. Went to the state mosque to take a few shots at sunset. However, I think the city mosque will be nicer, as its surrounded by a water feature (which is why they call it the "floating" mosque - a misnomer as it's not really floa...oh shut up!!). Up at 6:30am after around 3 and a half hours sleep - this was not a good idea as I find out later. No breakfast - also a bad idea. About halfway to the overnight stop at Laban Rata I'm utterly f#$^*d through lack of sleep and get two really bad bouts of the runs - the first time I have plenty of warning and get to a toilet...however the second time there's no warning and I have to charge off into the bush noting some amazing specimens of the giant pitcher plants that grow up here as I go. Just before I relieve myself I'm praying that there's not some exotic insect, snake or whatever around to take a bite of my arse - there wasn't. By the time I reached my room I felt ... read more

Wandering along the jetty at KK this morning getting used to my new camera a Canon 20D - a present to myself prior to leaving Japan..Two young guys offer to take me out in their boat to the water village visible from the jetty.I think "why not" and next thing Im heading off in this small boat with an outboard - will my insurance cover this? The village is on stilts, is extremely delapidated and poor and it has its own mosque also on stilts. Glad I went though - got some great shots while buzzing around and underneath the housing, mainly of the kids that seemed to be everywhere and all really photogenic, trying to grab my attention so that I'd take their photo. Organised my climb up Mt Kinmabulu (4095m) for tomorrow. Girlfriend called ... read more

Gate 1 Don Muang Bangkok (no I know it says Im in Sabah) 4:30pm. Someone decided to hurl animals from the sky as there are cats, dogs, elephants and assorted creatures bouncing off the tarmac to the sound of sharp crashing thunder accompanied with brilliant flashes of lightning. The runway approx 200m away is barely visible in the tropical downpour that's squatting over the airport.I'm watching aircraft taking off and landing trailing huge plumes of water and thinking that perhaps we're going to be delayed (I'm hoping so!) and we are, by about one hour. At the same time Im thinking about my girlfriend who's in Europe for a month and also the silly things that I miss about her - things like the floppy hats she wears and the way she walks with her pinkies out. ... read more

Omar has his first meeting in Malaysia... Not sure exactly were in Malaysia since he left the agenda somewhere and we can not pronounce the name... We just remember that is going to be really hot and humid. I am glad I am going...Yesterday was a bad day for me, I cried in front of the bank teller because I just felt overwhelmed (the hotel room does not have internet connection and I do not have a phone yet). We arrived to Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) and I can not believe how lucky I am!! I have always wanted to go there and see the Orangutans in one of the 3 reabilitation centers in the world!!! We arrive there and yes, it is humid and hot. We realized we have to wake up at 4 am to ... read more

Well, let me set the scene. On the 14th of February, we began what would eventually be the hardest thing we all have ever done. Sean and Fiona, Ryan and April and I started this 2 day trek up the highest Mountain in SE Asia. 4105 meters up with 99% being uphill, little to no flat areas at all. Some spots would make you sigh as you passed a hard stretch , went around the corner to anothe ruthless set of steep rocks. As for trudged up the first 6 km's up, we stop periodically, or I mean frequently, we finally got to Laban rata, that is the bsae stop where you stay over night. When I sat over night I mean you stay there for a few hours, we got there at 4:00pm and had ... read more

Well sorry for the lack of updates but we have had the best week ever! It started a little rocky having a delayed plane and getting into Kota Kinabalu at 2:00am, only to see a rat run across the street while we were getting a place to stay, but it was all up hill, very uphill the rest of the way! There are no people anywhere in the world like we have met here! As you walk down the street everyone says HI, or how are you, or hey man, just any english that they know, but the catch is ...they are not trying to sell you something like all the other places. They are only saying it to say it, very refreshing, always smiling and look happy. We are in Borneo, and I have no ... read more

.... ok where was I? Oh right the camping, well after the camping trip we came back to the main land in Kota Kinabula, just to sleep for we were off to the other side of Borneo in the morning. We ended up at that same bar we went to before, but this time we took the Irish.....ya let's just say the night ended with Sean and Fiona on one microphone and Me on the other, no no not in the bar, in the Burger King on the way home, yeah the speakers they use to order burgers got a rendition of : you never close you eyes anymore...." this being a Muslim populated place you would think they might not like the boldness of the westerns, but they seemed to enjoy it... however our pictures ... read more

the tallest mountain of south-east asia! with its over 4 km of height! looks impossible to climb blablabla! think there isn't an easier walk then this one! the only thing is the altitude! little bit of a headache should do the trick, just addapt to the environment and climb on in the morning! hmm, wait, but not after i see the first half of the semi finals of the europian cup! holland-portugal! we all know how that ended up! but anyway, i think not so many dutch people could say they watched the game at a little over 3000 metres height! even if they lost it! after being at the the top, i went to the middle of nowhere in this jungle camp! brilliant!~just sleeping in hammocks when monkeys throw appels at your roof and stuff ... read more

Culture shock...Borneo is a bit different than Australia and New Zealand. People staring at you, because I'm white and blond...Get jammed in a Minivan with 15 malaysians....who ofcourse can't speak a word English. But smiling always works I found out. I arrived at Kota Kinabalu, where I played a nice soccergame with some locals. Then I took a bus to Mount Kinabalu nat. Park, where I met Andrew a very fit Canadian guy. Together we hired a guide and started our two day climb. The top of the jungle was cold but rewarding. Then I went to Uncla Tan's, A jungle camp where I stayed for a couple days. We spotted a lot of wildlife there and in between we just had a great time living a primitive life. (you don't need that much to be ... read more
