Malaysia with no doubt surprised me specially after sleeping between buses & trains during 3 days coming all the way from the little hill tribe village in the North of Thailand where i was living & studying massage to this multi-cultural overwhelming city populated by Malays, Chinese & Indians to say the least because there's many many more ethnicities that undoubtedly add up to the flavor of this country...compared to the other countries i visited in South East Asia, it somehow felt that this place remained quite undiscovered and that the majority of travelers (including myself) used it only as a quick stop over to jump to the next destination.... Anyways, there is about 1.5 million people living here, first thing that stroke me when entering the city on the bus was the huge architectural monuments ... read more

Everyone in India has moustaches it seemed to me it's just that the men make more of a spectacle of them. Consequently, when we arrived in Goa I let my face hair grow until I settled on a natural bushy top lip and a semi Brazilian bottom lip. As time progressed I found that the length allowed me to twist the ends at the corners of my mouth achieving a kind of Salvador Dali effect. Sue didn;t like it and when George first saw me she laughed but I soldiered on. With no forward travel booked we arrived in Singapore early in the morning jumped into a cab and arrived at the bus station effortlessly. Except it was the wrong bus station and we endured a 15/20 minute route march with full packs trying to find ... read more

Tilbage til ... read more

On our second day in Tioman we decided to get a trip around the island in a boat with Belen, Nils, Henrik and Denise for 100RM each. We were picked up on the jetty by 3 locals at about 10.30AM and took off towards the first of 5 stops. First off was Juara, one of the more secluded and quiter beaches and reputedly, also one of the most beautiful. It took about half an hour to get there at a leisurely speed across the waves. The beach is beautiful but unfortunately the sky was a little cloudy when we got there so we weren't really able to appreciate it in full basking sunlight. However, we were the only people on the beach and it was cool standing on around half a mile of perfect sand with ... read more

Being a tropical island, Tioman has its fair share of scary, fascinating and cute creatures. We had only been on the island a matter of hours before we turned a corner and were face to face with a monitor lizard. Unlike the the cute little 10cm geckos that you usually find on holiday, monitor lizards are carnivorous beasts that can reach up to 7 feet long and it was quite a shock to come face to face with one. Fortunately, they are normally pretty scared of humans and this one did scuttle away when it saw us. Once we had done some exploring of Salang we found the river where the lizards live, which is where we met Jez and Faye. They had managed to get themselves a chalet too, they weren't sharing with the lizards. ... read more

After our sleepless night in Mersing we trudged to the jetty to catch the ferry to Mersing. A guy at the bedbug guesthouse (called Omar's Backpacker Hostel incedentally, in case you ever need to avoid it) had sold us a pair of return ferry tickets for 70RM each (about 14 pounds) and booked us into a chalet on the island for a further 80RM (16 pounds) so we already had accommodation sorted, at least for the first night. On the ferry we finally managed to get about an hour's sleep during the 2 hour crossing and thankfully woke up to see Tioman appear in the distance. It's a small island, only around 40km long and 12km wide and is covered with dense forest and a few small villages scattered around the coast, most with some chalets ... read more

After that brief city break, we thought it'd be cool to hop on some proper island (Sentosa doesn't count) and so we decided to go to Tioman - an island on the east coast of Malaysia sitting in the South China Sea and looking like a sleeping dragon. There is actually a legend attached to that island saying that once, a Chinese dragon princess was flying to her prince in Singapore. She stopped to have a rest in those warm waters and ended up loving the area to the point she decided to cut the journey short and take a form of an island. Not sure what the Singaporean price had to say about the fact the princess preferred to turn into an island rather than see him but that didn't seem to be included in ... read more

This little update is a round up for the ten days or so we spent on Tioman, because as you will see we didn't do an awful lot! So following on from KL we caught the overnight bus down to Mersing. This has to be our coldest ever (ever!) bus trip (just for good measure here's another ... ever!). Within the first five minutes I was shivering and had put on my jacket and socks. All to no avail, we were both absolutley frozen. Neither of us slept because we were too cold and when we eventually got off the bus at 3.30am we were only to glad to fall out into the heat! The bus station was naturally deserted and the few people that were on the bus with us all disappeared. We knew this ... read more

Greetings all - we're just back in Mersing after nine sun soaked days of snorkelling and swimming on Palau Tiomon. We stayed in an area called Salang which was basically one long strip with about 5 restaurants, 5 dive shops, 2 shops and a bar. We stayed in a wee hut with balcony again and were happy out! By the end of our spell there we felt like locals having eaten in every place several times and hanging out in the one and only bar at night...met a lot of cool people there too including one woman who has been travelling for 14 years....an inspiration to us all although the thoughts of living out of a rucksack for that long does make me shiver. The beach here was the nicest, if the smallest, we've been on. ... read more
