The rest of my Malaysian journeys involved a 4-day long trip to Tioman Island followed by 2 days in the jungle.
I'd met a good group of people at a backpackers in KL who were going to Tioman the following day. It wasn't really on my itinerary and it meant a bit of back-tracking, but after a few drinks I thought what the heck. The island was really good fun where tourism was minimal and you could just relax. We basically just hung out on the beach for most of the day until it was happy hour which was about a 20 meter walk away where we'd watch the sun go down. The nearest ATM was about an hours' walk away which really reflected the nature of the island. And it's tax-free too!
In central Malaysia meanwhile is Taman Nagara: a national park basically made up of jungle and rivers. I was with a new group of people by now we just did a bit of trekking, swimming and hanging out on the floating restaurants. It wsa all pretty basic too which was all good. During one of our treks, we bumped into this Swiss couple (whom we'd
tioman
daily view from happy hour past going the other way earlier). They said that they had to turn back .... because there was an elephant blocking the path. We said "what, you saw an elephant?!" -and they didn't even get a photo!!! Then they said that we could probably go back now as it may be gone (and they were going to get the boat back). Well well, obviously we wanted to see this elephant as we charged our way back through the jungle (with a level of caution) but by the time we reached the scene, of course it had gone! We could hear noises, could see where it had been (obviously as it made its own track) and could smell elephanty smells. It was exciting though during our hunt. As for the Swiss couple... grrrr grr
The final part to my Malaysian trip was a train ride through the jungle railway- which was pretty scenic - to the city of Kota Baru (near the Thai border). Kota Baru was a bit more like Indonesia (a bit less-clean) and reminded me of the old days in Indo. We went to this huge food market where there was so much food and all different
types. Also sharing the court were open drains, rats, cockroaches, lots of stray cats and rubbish everywhere. But it didn't stop me from treating it like a buffet- the food was great.
