Well, what a week we've had! I'll try and split what we've been up to over a few entries so that I can fit more pictures on. First off, we got the coach from Johor Bahru to Mersing last week. The coach was decent standard and it was cool watching out the windows while we wound our way through the bumpy roads of East Malaysia up to Mersing. When we got there, only 2 hours later, it was sweltering and we trudged up one of the two main roads in Mersing looking for a hostel that the Lonely Planet guide had recommended as cheap, friendly and clean. It turned out to be very cheap, quite friendly but filthy. At the moment we're having trouble uploading pictures (ancient pc's again!) but if I can get them to ... read more

Well, the last few days have been just spent chilling out in Johor Bahru. The city is not particularly interesting but the guest house was so nice, as well as being really cheap, that we thought it would be nice to stick around and relax for a few days after the mania of Singapore and KL. Also, it gave us an extra week or so for the weather to get better in our next destination, Mersing. Mersing is on the east coast of Malaysia, about 3 hours north of here (in the southermost tip). It's a quiet little fishing town and it looks really nice from everything we've seen so far. It's also the ferry port for Pulau Tioman, a gorgeous looking little island that we'll try and get across to, weather permitting. The monsoon season ... read more

On my free day in Singapore I had the opportunity to go to Malaysia. The original plan was to spend a couple of days in Singapore and a couple of days in Malaysia but that tour ran out of room so we booked for Singapore only. Once we got there the guide said that enough people were interested we could to a day trip to Malaysia which is about 30 minutes from Singapore. I decided that I wanted to get on that band wagon and was so very happy that I did. I have to also admit that I wanted another stamp on my passport. Although it took a lot just to cross the broader, we did not need a visa but to officially depart from Singapore through immigration and then enter Malaysia through immigration. Fortunately ... read more

(Day 314 on the road)Picture a tropical island with lush palm trees, a beach front bungalow about three metres away from the sea, an underwater world with abundant fish and great visibility, and you pretty much get the idea of how Jawad and I have spent the last week. It was pure heaven. If you get the picture, you can stop reading now. If you want a few more details, read on. Tioman was once voted among the ten most beautiful islands of the world, and it really is gorgeous. It is pretty big, but only the small coastal strip can be inhabited, as mountains rise steep from the coast. The the inland is thick mountainous jungle, mostly left to itself. All the life thus resolves around a very narrow strip of land right by the ... read more

Continued... Next stop after lunch was a chocolate factory. The main products that come out of Malaysia is rubber, coca beans and palm oil. I tried a tomato flavored chocolate…wouldn’t recommend it but it wasn’t too bad. Last stop was duty free shopping before going home. Wish we had more time because I would have liked to drive another 3 hours to get to Kuala Lampur did get a picture of a sign with the words on it. We returned to Ho Chi Minh City and will leave for Nha Tran which is northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. I am looking forward to it because Ho Chi Minh City is so over populated, congested, polluted and I can smell the sewer everyday. I have changed my flight to leave earlier from Ho Chi Minh so ... read more

Desaru, Malaysia There was a group of NUS exchange students going out Sunday night to watch the fireworks go off as Singapore welcomed in the Chinese Lunar New Year. (Why no pictures? Singapore didn't have any fireworks due to the economy - cheap skates!). While talking to a few friends about where to travel for our Monday & Tuesday holiday, we heard a group talking about going to Desaru, Malaysia. We decided that it was easier than trying Bintan, Indonesia (which required a more expensive ferry, purchase of a visa, and no promise of a place to stay). So began the unplanned Ballad of Francis the Malaysian.... We were leaving Singapore aboard a small ferry aka "Dum Boat" for a short S$10 ride to middle-of-nowhere, Malaysia. We had be given warning that Singapore's customs would be ... read more

Almost on a whim, in October of 2008 I decided to load up the Fortuner with camera and bird-watching equipment, bird books, maps and a list of bird watching locations, and head north into Malaysia. I had no set plans, no firm route, and no hotel bookings. I left Singapore on Monday the 13th with a wonderful sense of freedom - it had probably been 40 years since I set out on an almost totally unplanned solo trip. Leaving home at 4.45pm, I stopped to check my tyres at the petrol station just up the road. The pump attendant discovered a very large nail in one of the rear tyres which made for a great start to the trip - but better than a blow out on a Malaysian back road. It took me almost an ... read more
