Today promised to be very boring. Woke up early to catch the 7:30am bus out of the rain forest to Jerantut to change to another bus to Kuantun to change again to Mersing. All in all we arrive in Mersing at 6pm. Many, many hours of sitting on buses. The first was a bumpy local job down the mountain. The second promised to be an upgrade but failed to deliver due to some bung suspension or something but we were near hitting the ceiling at every bump in the road (even though it appeared flat). The third however was quite a treat. The driver stopped at a little food court where i picked up a Mee Goreng and mango crush. Grand total: $2.50 and it was beyond delicious. In Mersing the bus driver walked us to ... read more

As I push through the swamp, wary of snakes and spiders, I brush against a palm tree. Centimetre long red ants in their tens come rushing out and attack me, biting all over. Their acid enters my skin and a pain much like an electrical current pulsates through my body. I crush them with my open palms but more come to take their place. I drop my guard and waddle through the knee deep water and mud as fast as I humanly can to the dry ground up ahead. I clamber over a toppled section of a barbed wire fence, slide the backpack off of my shoulders, dispose of my shirt and trousers and jump about, swatting away my attackers. Native American dance over, I stand there and rethink the reasons for coming here. Ten days ... read more

I caught the boat from the Perhention islands to Kota Bhau at 7am with the sun rising over the larger Perhention Island. You have to catch a small boat out 20 meters to be picked up by a slightly larger boat to ferry you across, the bay was littered with these as people sadly left the perhention to reach there next destination, everybody as sad as the next to be leaving such a wonderful island. Other than agreeing that we would get the first boat out i had made no other plans with Trina and Maren about where to meet, they were not on the boat that i had boarded, as for the onward journey they had bought tickets and planned how to get there, my plan was to float in there slip stream, as things ... read more

Its strange how things come together and how travel and learning something new brings people together. Thomas and I have been talking about learning scuba diving for years but never found an agreeable time to do so. And then, it all came together within 2 weeks. My work trip got postponed, JL's hol trip got postponed, Thomas and Dennis had an available weekend and so off we went. 3 guys and a gal off to Dayang for our padi open water beginner course. We had taken our pool and theory the previous weekend under a a very jovial and humourous instructor. Pity he couldn't come with us on our open water dives. Things got excited as the weekend neared. Slightly fearful of the drills in the open sea, the unknown and breathing underwater from an ... read more

Day 5 Today is the longest travel day of our trip. We travel form JB to Butterworth via Kuala Lumpur on the Exspress Rekayat train. We are travelling 1st Class and we wish the seats on the train could be transplanted onto our Air Asia flight back to Oz. We journeyed up from JB through what was jungle but is now predominantly palm oil plantations, which is one of Malaysia’s major exports. The train left JB about 30 minutes late but the trip has been quite pleasant. Lots of leg room in the seats and they recline very well. We arrived in KL about 2.30 so instead of about an hour and a half break we only had 15 minutes. This was enough time to get some chips and drinks to sustain us on the rest ... read more

Day 4 - Today has been a very quiet day indeed. We decided we had had enough of crossing the border to Singapore and just chill in Johor Bahru. We strolled out about midday and headed to a couple of shopping centres. Conveniently close together we visited Tesco and Jusco along with the myriad of specialty stores that you get in a modern shopping mall. I found a Starbucks Coffee Shop in the mall, and of course in Malaysia they provide free wi-fi internet access. In saying that, I did eventually find out that wi-fi is free in Singapore once you register with SG wireless, although you do need a mobile phone for them to SMS a password to you. After shopping we got a cab back to the hotel where we imbibed in some of ... read more

Monday April 13th The minibus was fine, slept for a bit which was good because when you were awake you couldn’t look out the windows for the fear of dying as the driver tore his little hiace van through the jungle at breakneck speed. We arrived in the town to get a speed boat to the Perhentian islands at about 10.30 and boarded a little speedboat which proceeded to ramp over the waves and crash down on the ocean with enough force to have our asses bruised. Nice tip though as you headed out with all the islands in the distance. Felt like we were heading for the set of lost. There is very little on the Perhentian islands. We came to Long Be3ach on Perhentian Kecil, the small island. It is about a kilometer of ... read more

Pulau Rawa We left Pulau Tioman at about 7:30AM for Pulau Rawa. The ferry dropped us off right in the middle of the island. As soon as I stepped out of the boat, I was stunned! This place was amazing. It was only about 1000 meters long and 300 meters wide and the beach didn't even stretch across the whole island, but it was beautiful. You'll like the pictures of the island, but those don't even really do it justice. I had my camera in my room during the day when it was sunny, but I refused to leave the beach to go get it. We started out by going to the top of the island to take a few photos of the scenery. Then, after lunch, we hung out all day and did a bit ... read more

Getting out of Singapore yesterday was not as bad as I thought it would be. Being a Sunday the traffic was light and the sign posting excellent. The only issue we had was with the 'one way system' around the city which seemed to go in the opposite direction to the way we wanted to go. The island is fairly flat (thank goodness) as it was very hot and humid. By the time we reached JB in Malaysia, having covered only 23 miles we were shattered. We were both very tired however even before we started that day. The previous night we had had little sleep seemingly still suffering from the effects of jet lag. Furthermore any attempt to sleep wasn't helped by the constant drone of traffic that could be heard all night despite living ... read more

A Kelong trip was in the making for quite some time and we finally did it! We set off early Sunday morning in a group of 9 across the causeway into our neighbours land for a short break away from our work. Isaac, Kelvin, Ivy, LH, GM, Pauline, HW, Jace and myself made the trip. Traffic was light and we had breakfast at a coffeeshop. I had black sause wanton noodles which I thought was tasty. I must have been hungry. Our first stop was the Go-Kart Track at Plentong. The former Permas Jaya track had shifted into a plantation and we crossed our fingers that the driver would not complain of the 3.5km undulating terrain into the plantation. Lucky for us he did not. This was my first Go-Karting experience and it was fun with ... read more
