There is something wrong with my Nihon go teacher, Suzuki sensei. First she tells Fredrick the swedish boy that he looks like Edgar Allen Poe, then just minutes before our class excursion she asks me if I do sumo. I certainly do bloody not do sumo, and to be perfectly honest I take an awful lot of offence to the question. Sumo indeed. Apparently I have been eating too much of Sanaes mothers wonderful japanese cooking. hmpf. Moving on. Today we had a lovely class excursion to the nearby park to dance about under the sakura trees and actually see a sumo wrestling tournament. This is so unbelievably awesome as it's not sumo season, the tournaments when it is sumo season are really expensive and hard to get into and this one is completely free. Oh ... read more

Tokyo is city of Pachinko. I had no idea what it meant until today, but Pachinko places are everywhere, people always giggle when you ask them what it is and I think the word sounds really cute. Pa-chin-ko!! To me it sounds like the kind of place you go to to be cuddled by smiling, furry animals under a sea of glittering rainbows and shooting stars. However, when I went exploring today with the german girls we discovered that there were no brilliant rainbows, it was certainly not the place for animals (smiling and furry or otherwise) and whilst there may be a chance of a shooting it most definately wouldn't be from a distant star. Pachinko is in fact a grim, dingy casino type place, where all the machines are these odd contraptions, kinda like ... read more

12:30 am - Wake up: Damn. It's morning already, and Sanae is already out of bed. I groan and inwardly curse Sanae for needing so little sleep - she'd gone to bed after I'd fallen asleep and had woken up before me as well, and was now fiddling about int he bathroom. Nihon jin Energizer bunny extraordinaire. 12:35 am - Shuffle into the loungeroom to check the time - 7:00 am. Bugger. It's still dark outside which means it's going to be another bastard of a day. 12:40 am - Dress quickly to protect my delicate self from this freezing nasty morning. 12:45 am - Fold away my bed into the cupboard and wander back into the living area. 12:51 am - Glance up at the clock on the wall. 12:52 am - Whoa.... Double take, ... read more

Day 100 - we finally broke the century mark!!! Our big reward was a beautiful blue sky, clean air, and water you can drink straight out of the tap!! We love Japan already! After nearly two months between SE Asia and China we are finally back to el primero mundo. Tokyo is Amazing! It is surgically clean and everything seems to operate with machine-like efficiency. On top of that there is a refreshing amount of greenery despite every inch of the ground being neatly covered with asphalt. We stayed very close to downtown Tokyo and Ginza so we could walk to the Imperial Plaza and all the shopping a Hilton Sister could ever want. At first we were totally overwhelmed by the subway with all of the transferring and diferent lines, but once we figured ... read more

It's Boxing Day and the decorations are coming down. Santa's miruku is still warm, and teams of men in pocket-sized vans are harvesting the length of Ginza's main street for Christmas tree fruit. There's a short man on a short ladder viciously rending baubles from the first of six thousand short trees. He's got a long way to go, and he doesn't look happy about it. When it rains in Tokyo... We get wet. Like Andrew WK. It started raining last night and hasn't stopped once. It's now 9pm and there's a cold war going on in the basement for the single coin operated dryer. We've easily got the biggest arsenal, but the eastern bloc keep showing up before we deploy the next load. According to the Geneva convention, we have to let them have a ... read more

OK stands for "oh shit this is so huge my brain can't register it, like an ant on a basketball trying to contemplate the length of the court. M'kay?" We almost got lost trying to find jimbocho on the subway. The express to Tokyo station was a breeze, but after that we had to get to the hotel, which involves two subway stops on separate lines. Nothing like a challenge after a 10hr, 20min flight. As we emerged from Jimbocho station into the cool, 8 degree air (welcome by this stage), we paused. I knew where I was, we were just about there, but wait! In front of us, in plain english: "You are Here". "A Map!" we cried, and proceeded to verify the directions i had painstakingly recorded in my beige notebook. Sugoi. We set ... read more
