So we were up quite early this morning to catch the train from Kyoto back to Tokyo. British Rail needs to look at the Japanese train system as I know it could learn a lot from it. The train was brilliant once again and gave me time to finish the book I have been reading called Still Alice by the author Lisa Genova. If you only read one book a year, this is the book for you, it is one of the stories that you want to stand up and tell a train full of strangers YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. I had been given a tip from a co-worker about Tsukiji and decided it was something I would check out. I am certainly glad I did, I found the wholesale market fascinating with the different kinds of fish that were for sale, and what kinds could be kept alive and how and those that could not. Here you can buy fish as small as Krill (likely freeze dried) and as large as whole fish or chunks of Tuna. The market itself is quite large, about 3 blocks by 3 blocks. It is bounded by Harumi Dori on the North and East sides, Shin-Ohashi Dori on the North and West sides, and the Sumida river on the South side. Day 3. Japan Another day of marathon walking, more temples and the Kyoto modern art museum. Today I spent most of the day in wandering through the small streets on the eastern side of Kyoto. Several Buddhist temples nestled into the mountainside. Mountains which surround the city. These tramples had a different character, different from day 2temples. They were simple and quiet, but the gardens were integrated into forest. In the zen rock gardens of yesterday, everything was represented by sand, rock and vegetation in a very prescribed way, through the placement of the rocks, the striations in the sand, the type of vegetation, quite beautiful in its simplicity. Après avoir visité le marché de Tsukiji, le ventre assez lourd, nous nous sommes dirigés vers le quartier de Shiodome pour visiter les jardins du parc Hama-Rikyu. Nous avons hésité à prendre le métro puis finalement décidé d’y aller en marchant histoire de digérer plus rapidement. Il faut reconnaître que l’univers est plutôt paradoxal. D’un côté, les monstrueux buildings et les voies ferrées perchées au premier quart de ces semi-grattes-ciel, et de l’autre côté, aux bords de la baie de Tokyo, ce parc où le temps semble s’arrêter pour tous les passants que nous croisons. Honnêtement, le moment était idéal pour parfaire notre digestion, et il faut reconnaître que l’endroit est assez joli malgré la domination sans précédent du logo « Conrad » quand on tourne le dos à la baie de Tokyo. Tsukiji Fish Market was the highlight of our Japan trip in Oct of 2008. Our friend ZheYu (喆瑜) who lives in Tokyo was our excellent tour guide. We went to the market by subway around 8am. There weren't many visitors by that time. We were able to walk around freely. Even though they are boxes of fish and sea food everywhere, it really doesn't smell too fishy inside. ZheYu was able to tell us many names for the seafood she loves to eat. We can recognize some Chinese characters on the signs, but unable to tell what types of seafood they were.
