.......but probably not Our school(gakkou) made the random announcement that a television crew was coming to give the Americans an interview of sorts. I don't remember the details well, but it was some gameshow, kind of like Sabado Gigante, where many acts, contestants, and performances take place. One of the sessions was going to show clips of Americans trying really bizarre Japanese foods(tabemono), so everyone could exploit our miseries. Just about all the Americans signed up to volunteer. Well, then that fateful day finally came by. They set up all the cameras in a separate room, and had everyone wait upstairs. For some reason, I was chosen to go first. Maybe because of my eccentric appearance? Who knows. I sat down at a desk and looked up to a camera that was about 6 inches from ... read more

......and About Dining In General in Japan Im getting along pretty well with the Koreans. Its pretty tough communicating with them as you may expect, given the double language barrier. But as Japanese class progresses, our repertoire of language and potential of understanding increases, so our progress quickly shows. I had a funny thought that, for the first time, time spent hanging out with your friends is now time also spent studying. What better way to practice what we've learned in class than to just hang out and talk to your friends? We went out to a restaurant and took turns cooking our dishes in the center hotplate. Koreans like to share their food. Its custom to order something, then everyone share their plates and have a bit of everyone's food. Its kind of cool if ... read more

Dont Mind The Wrinkly Old Men Jason and I were supposed to go to Hakone to dip in some hot springs(onsen), but it didn't exactly work out since it was fully booked. Instead, we found a public bath(sento) that we thought would serve as a good substitute. We certainly got more than we bargained for. Japanese sento's origins date back to the first century. They have naturally declined in number, since alot of Japanese homes (like mine) are built with a deep bath tub. Even so they are still important. Japan is a busy, crowded place with people stuck pretty well in their routines. Sometimes the sento is the only place for company workers to unwind, especially since its such a large area to relax and many pleasures can be satisfied all in one place at ... read more

Fun-Filled Weekend This weekend was filled with unexpected events. My Friday begins as always with me heading to class. Our teacher (sensei) informed us that this weekend's (shumatsu) culture class excursion will correspond with Sunday's holiday. According to Japan's old lunar calendar, the start of the new year took place on Setsubun. There is also the tradition that the people born during that year would have to eat the same number of beans as their age to bring health for the entire year. People also dress in oni (ogre) costumes while the others would throw beans at them. Oni doesn't only refer to the monster, but symbolizes all other bad things such as illness, bad luck, etc. Our teacher then handed us some beans for us to try; for dry beans they were quite delicious(oishii). At ... read more

Im going to watch the game? For those of you who know me, you'll know Im completely out of the loop when it comes to sports. I don't mind playing them from the time, I actually really enjoy a casual game of football, dodgeball, or ping-pong; its just that I cant watch sports on television or physically go to watch the game at the stadium/field. I don't have any emotional attachment to any of the teams, therefore, I don't really care who's winning or what's happening to whatever team/player. Maybe with the Bucs when we won the SuperBowl (Im from Tampa), but thats about it. Well, I got invited by my two fellow Korean classmates to go watch a Handball game between Korea and Japan. They had an extra ticket, and it was a generous ... read more

Im a School Boy Japan has alot of getting used to, even for me. The best advise I could give anyone before coming here is........learn some Japanese...please (onegaishimasu). That past week consisted of getting my schedule down. Im gonna get all the boring daily things out of the way, so you have an idea of what my week looks like. Then I will add cool(sugoi) posts when I see fit.I'd prefer there be a strong emphasis on cultural differences and other noteworthy things, rather than just, "Today I did this and that". Those take time to prepare, but hopefully it will be soon. I will also put useful japanese words in parentheses after the english word like I did above. Mondays through Fridays are my school going days. It takes an hour to get to ... read more

As you can see, this is my first blog. HTML is what I need to familiarize myself with before this page can start looking spiffy. So here we go.... Note: There are many thoughts, observations, and distinct difference that I saw/had throughout the days of which Im explaining, but I'll leave that to another post, so that I may have pictures ready to coincide. Im waiting for my financial aid to come in, so I'll have money to purchase to a new camera. My arrival in Japan starts out with a bang. My plane is four hours late since this lady decided to get really sick and make the plane pull over in Anchorage, Alaska. Then she's like, " Its ok, I think I feel better now". I thought someone was gonna get up and punch her ... read more
