Sunday, 21st January 2018 Bus Service # 117 took an insane 2.5 hours to complete the 100km journey from Naha Airport to the Ocean Expo Park (2,500 Yen). This was where I would be based for the next 2 nights. I was thankful that I had taken a full breakfast at the airport prior to boarding the bus. The ride was uneventful for the most part as I slept through half of the journey. Things only picked up towards the final leg as the bus made a loop around the Motobu Peninsula with the beautiful Nago Bay on my left. Bus-Tip: The "Yanbaru Express" Bus does the same trick from the airport at a cheaper rate of 2,000 Yen. The best perk - there is a bus stop directly within the hotel premises. I finally alighted ... read more

Saturday, 20th January 2018 My first trip in 2018 brought me to the island of Okinawa, about four times the size of Singapore, yet containing only about a quarter of Singapore's population. Thanks to Jetstar Asia direct service to Naha, the red-eyed journey took about 5 hours which was a real time-saver. Gone were the days when I needed to make a lengthy transit in Hong Kong (2013) or Taipei (2016). For some reason, I'm beginning to appreciate red-eyed journeys more and more since such timing is the most time-efficient. I could still spend my day-time hours in the office before heading to the airport in the evening. By the time my flight landed in Okinawa at 8 the next morning, I was ready to start my sight-seeing plans before checking into the hotel in the ... read more

Wednesday, 26th October 2016 It's day #6 of my trip today and my penultimate day in Okinawa before flying back to Taipei tomorrow. I'm still determined to idle around in Naha city today, doing some eating, some shopping and chit-chatting with the friendly locals. I could sense their smile when they realised that I was from Singapore. At least, they had nice memories of the place where I came from. Words like "clean", "safe" and "hot" were used to describe my country. In the afternoon, there was a colourful street parade along the International Street with teams mainly from the US walking through the 1.6km boulevard. I was informed that they were here to take part in the 6th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival. While I did not know the exact significance of this festival, it seemed that ... read more

Tuesday, 25th October 2016 I woke up feeling really refreshed this morning from my comfortable futon. The weather in Naha was rather warm for late October with clear blue skies greeting me. I didn't have an itinerary to follow for my short stay here. Even though I haven't been to the northern half of the island where the touristy Aquarium and the Pineapple Park are located, I haven't have the intention to visit them during this trip either. Instead, I was perfectly happy to remain in Naha city today to spend sometime having an idyllic lunch at the Afternoon Tea Café. I visited the outlet within Ryubo Departmental Store which was next to my hotel. The environment was rather relaxed and inviting even though it was already teeming with people when I visited at 11.30am. I ... read more

Monday 24th October 2016 I managed to squeeze in a 4D3N Okinawa excursion in the midst of my Taiwan trip. I've done Okinawa in January 2013 and it is always good to be back to a familiar place with some new experiences to take away. The flight time from Taipei to Okinawa is a mere 70 minutes via Eva Airways. After a quick meal service onboard, my near-empty plane landed safely at Naha Airport. I took the 1625 hours flight and it was evening by the time I reached my destination. My hotel (Okinawa Kariyushi Lch Izumizaki Kenchomae Hotel) is a pleasant monorail ride from the airport station, located at the start of the mile-long Kokusai Dori (International Street). It is right next to the Ryubo Departmental Store that is home to a couple of nice ... read more

At Sea Glass Beach in Okinawa, you can find sparkling jewels of sapphire blue, pearl white, emerald green, and onyx black everywhere—and it’s all free. If you’re reading this with head cocked in wonder, you’ve probably already guessed that I’m not talking about a beach littered with precious stones. No, the sparkling jewels I’m referring to are a wondrous conglomerate of nature at its finest. The ocean rolls and roars, a majestic symphony of whooshing and crashing with the wind topping the waves with caps of white like a cupcake in a bakery you might find elsewhere on the island. The rolling waves culminate against jet black jagged rocks topped with bright green moss. The combination of color is unique to anything else I’ve seen while living two plus years on the island. The sand around ... read more

One of the joys of living in some one else's country is learning how to cook the local food. One of the joys of working with an international staff is that the food can be from anywhere on the planet. So, on the coldest weekend in Okinawa for 100 years, what better to do than exchange cooking and language lessons in a cosy kitchen. Introducing Nadines' Oishi Chocolate Mousse...... read more

Iheya Island is a tiny 20-kilometer strip of craggy mountains surrounded by subtropical sea, just north of Okinawa Main Island. Three tiny villages of farmers and fishermen huddle in calm sheltered spots with magnificent views of ocean and jungle. The long white beaches are decorated with fantastical rock formations some that house ancient gods. There are lots of traditional Okinawan wooden houses, some lovingly tended and others sagging into the greenery. The people have their own dialect, dances and stories and are very hospitable. My first visit during the Tour de Okinawa was wonderful. There was a welcome party, lots of locals rode around the island with us and streamers and dancers farewelled us. Perfect weather, friendly locals, delicious vegetarian food, comfortable homey accommodation and long empty beaches were worthy of another visit. On my second ... read more

Open Days in Japanese schools are held to show case good practice, and hold the schools accountable to their clients. Each year, there are Open Days held specifically for the parents, open to the general public and for fellow teachers to attend. I had the privilege of attending the Open Day at Yamada Elementary School (a public school in Onna Village) where they showcased a six-year journey of whole school improvement in ICT. The afternoon began with the Kenkyu Shunin (Research Chief) outlining the school improvement journey. Demonstration classes from Grades 1 to 6, in Maths, Japanese, Social Studies, Science and PE were held. Teachers demonstrated routine classes where ICT supported good classroom practice. Next came workshops led by teachers from within the school and outside guests. The afternoon finished with a 3-part Keynote address by ... read more
