We head off up the hill away from the city centre in search of temples. We don’t have to look too hard. Every second building here seems to be a spectacular temple. We walk up along Matsubara-dori Street towards the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The street is wall to wall shops and is packed with tourists. We need breakfast, so we stop at a food stall. Issy says that other than sumo wrestlers there is no such thing as an overweight Japanese person, and therefore all Japanese food must be good for you. I wonder what sumo wrestlers eat. I try not to wonder about this too much, and instead try very hard to believe Issy’s line that all Japanese food is good for you as I munch on my breakfast of deep fried octopus cakes. The Kiyomizu-dera ... read more

Today we head to Kyoto. As we wait for our taxi, a group of five school children approach me, and read to me from a very carefully prepared script. They tell me that they are from the Niko Junior High School English Club, and want to know if it would be alright if they asked me a few questions about Japanese music. I sense that this might be quite a short conversation. They show me some laminated pictures of what I assume are Japanese pop stars, and then ask me the second question on their script, which is whether I know who these people are. I tell them that I don’t. They giggle, which I think is more in disbelief than anything else. They tell me that these people are all very famous. I start to ... read more

After Nagasaki we entered uncharted territory as we travelled across Northern Kyushu. Col, Hide and I had never been ther but luckily for us Daisuke had. Because a cyclone last year took out a major bridge along the train route to Hita we had a coach take us the last couple of hours. That turned into an advantage as we detoured into the mounains to visit the tiny pottery town of Onta. Only 11 families live there and they all create Ontayaki pottery using age old methods. The local clay is crushed by a large water driven hammer before being soaked into slurry. The kneaded and wedged clay is thrown using a foot wheel to make everyday wares with simple clay and glaze finishes. The pots are dried outside on batterns and fired in a traditional ... read more

I am getting a bit of a fixation on the history of Japan, those shogun families and the castles and shrines that mark where they walked, lived and impacted the people of this country. Dangerous for blog writing, cause I can wax long and painfully deep into the weeds. And then find out I misunderstood something or other. Given Kyoto has over 1500 temples, shrines and some castles on top of that, I’m going to skip the endless historical tidbits that strike me as interesting, to save you the bore-factor. One bit that clicked into place for me here was the relationship between the Imperial emperors (established in the 4th century and still exist today living in the imperial palace in Tokyo) and the shogun crowd. In 1185, the first samurai government took over political power ... read more

We have arrived in beautiful Japan early morning to the sounds of a welcoming brass band and young children singing a Japanese welcome. The Japanese customs however were not so welcoming! They wanted everyone ashore, off the ship whether they were going on a shore excursion or not so that took ages, lucky we had a trip ashore planned and got through a little quicker, but they were most precise in their examination of all passengers and crew. The locals however are very friendly and welcoming, we took a trip to palace to see magnificent gardens, Fiona you would have been in raptures! They have double blossomed (if there is such a word) cherry trees, magnificent however our guide told us it has been an early season and most trees are shedding their blooms. hump! But ... read more

KYOTO TO NARITA- Today is our last day in Kyoto. We met Makoon for our last temple visits. The first temple that we went to is very popular averaging 13,000 visitors a day and of course even more in high season. Fushari anari, or the Temple of 10,000 tori. We got there early and it was already quite busy. The guardian animal of this temple is the fox. So there are fox at every gate. After passing by the major temple where people can make wishes or make vows of things they are committed to doing, the path splits and starts climbing through the first Tori. The first line of Tori number about 100. Then there is a second split with another 100 on each side and on it goes climbing up the mountain until the ... read more

Today is our second day in Kyoto. The weather here seems to be very unpredictable. The weatherman never gets it right. Today is a beautiful day chilly in the morning but warm and sunny in the afternoon. Our guide, Macoon met us in the lobby at 8 am and we went over our days itinerary. We went first to Arashiyama which was a beautiful zen area built by a shogun who was the best friend of the emperor who had been sent to and isolated isle. There is a beautiful lake at first that is very still and has large koi. Then the path leads through beautiful azalea and rhododendron plants. The colors were fantastic. We finally made our way to the path leading through the bamboo forest. That was really surreal. The bamboo are about ... read more

Today was a transfer day for Tokyo to Kyoto for Dennis and I, and to Osaka for John and Michael. We had scouted out all the information we could about the trains, so we left our wonderful hotel in Tokyo and went to the Tokyo Central Station, using the Yeasiu Entrance. We knew we had to find the 505 Hikari train to Osaka and Kyoto. We looked at the boards until they came up in English and found that we needed Track 16. We knew from our tickets that we were in Car 10 Seats 2c and 2d. We found Track 16 and John and I stood on the #10 sign indicating that's where Car 10 would stop and load. While John stood with the suitcases, Michael and I got some bento boxes for the trip. ... read more
