So last night i was super helpful in making sure no cocktails were wasted they even put alcohol in the ones that were for display so i drank the as well haha. New day new adventure and today's adventure is Arashiyama although the weathers not to good but I'm sure it wont rain to heavily haha famous last words. I took the train from about 20 minutes to get there and then quickly found my way to the bamboo path via another temple that required me parting with my money for entry. When i was walking through the path it was impossible to guess how many bamboo trees were actually there maybe thousands lining each side of the pathway and easily deep enough on each side to not be able to see where they ended like ... read more

When i arrived in Kyoto i was very pleased indeed with the hostel i can recommend it Piece Hostel is the name very close to the train station and super comfortable. I had my first bath in 6 months i didnt want to get out could of happily sat there all night and just kept refilling the hot water. I was also introduced to my first Sake which is the Japanese rice wine and im quite a fan i must admit it's a lot easier to drink that the chinese rice wine put it that way. So between my Sake my bath and my comfy bed im well happy. Fushimi Inari shrine My favourite film is Memoirs of Geisha i know original when travelling Asia but hey never mind. One of my favourite scenes from that ... read more

Having spent a little bit of time planning last night today went a lot smoother but no less tiring. I invested in a bus pass today having spent a fortune on transport yesterday but that had a lot to do with repeatedly getting lost oops. Anyway first stop of the day was Nijo Castle, a very old traditional building surrounded by lush gardens, archways and beautiful scenery. Inside the castle I was unfortunately unable to take any photographs as they say it will damage the wall art but then in the same breathe they tell you that the art on the walls are copies and if you want to see the originals you can pay to go in to the museum on site. Convenient. The building was large and quite creaky with perfect wooden flooring throughout ... read more

I am getting behind on my blogging so I am going to try and cover the last three days in one big hit. This will be tough. Are you ready? Downtown Over the last few days we have been exploring the downtown region of Kyoto where there is lots of shopping to do, sights to see and food to eat. While we were exploring the downtown area, we discovered a local board-game cafe where you could come in and play games (for a price). It was pretty cheap and we are always looking to learn new games. As we entered we were roped into a mass game of 'Dobble'. Then the owner taught us two more games- a slightly more difficult variation on Jenga and a strategy game called Kingdomino. Kyoto Tower One evening this week ... read more

Today we found ourselves thrust into the heart of a Kyoto Winter. As soon as we walked outside, we were chilled to our core. I could feel my extremities begin to slowly freeze. Our love for Kyoto, however was not dampened. After a small debate over the pronunciation of castle, it was off to see the mighty castles of Kyoto. We took a bus to Nijo Castle. The castle was home to the Shoguns of Japan during the Edo period. In (extremely) layman' terms, the Shogun was a position given out by the emperor to basically make all military commands. Given world affairs at the time- an important guy. The castle and gardens were enormous and beautiful. Every wall, door handle and architrave was spectacularly detailed- and with reason. Great power is not earned through ulterior ... read more

Sorry for the lack of updates, we have been busy travelling to and around Kyoto. It took us a little over two and half hours to reach the old capital via bullet train. This was impressive considering the 450km distance. Kyoto is much smaller, quieter and a little colder than Tokyo. It is well-mixed cocktail of history and innovation. On our first day in Kyoto we decided to stroll to a Kimono store, a little over half hour's walk away. On the way we were distracted by the beautiful residential streets, shrines and parks on our way. The residential streets were so narrow, we pondered how anyone could possibly park in the such tight spaces. The architecture of modest homes were quite spectaular. At the Kimono store I was taught how to properly wear a Kimono ... read more

I thought that Japan had shown me it all would regarding fancy toilets, but I was in for a surprise in a most unsuspecting place. I had previously booked a one day cycle tour of Kyoto after reading great reviews on Trip Advisor with Cycle Kyoto and so we turned up at the backstreet office near Kyoto Station at 9.30am. Greeted by Jaime, a Chilean guy who has lived in Japan for 20 years, we clambered past the many bikes in the cramped room to the low sofas at the back to wait for the other people. Through a small sliding door behind us was a compartment containing the 'restroom' - a pale avocado all-in-one sink and loo. The sink area was the top of the cistern with a solitary tap that had no mechanism to ... read more

Enlightment? Rain. Cycling Kyoto and a decent pair of Americans We seem to do so much each day that we forget things when it comes to do our blogs. Some days we have chance to write as we go along and some days we check each other's blogs and realise we've missed something. Neither of those things have happened for the last two days and we've both forgotten the same thing two days running. Yesterday we both forgot to write about an experience we had at a temple where we paid 100¥ each to gain enlightenment. Or at least try... We attempted this by going down some stairs and then walking round a room holding a handrail. If we'd let go of the handrail there was a chance we could hit wall with face as, yes, ... read more

The day started with rain, lots of rain and continued with more rain. I just don't know how rain can keep raining so much without running out of rain. I really don't. Looking out of the window this morning, my heart sank a little as it was raining as hard as rain can. Never mind, I said, a bit of rain won't stop us seeing Kyoto - we've come a long way and as always, no time to waste. But it wasn't just a bit of rain. Kyoto Station is pretty awesome and gets a few paragraphs (a futuristic entry into Japan's old imperial capital, etc) and a photo in my guidebook which proved to me that this was a station to see - although I'd already seen much of it. It has many floors, shops ... read more

Typhoons, trenchfoot, temples and the Japanese theatrical equivalent of golf. It wasn't until late afternoon that we found out that the torrential rain we had had all day was actually a typhoon. One with a name as well. (If anyone sees the job naming typhoons, hurricanes etc going please give me a shout-I quite fancy that). We weren't at the epicentre of it thankfully but by god it's rained today. Hence the trenchfoot. Our first stop of today raised a very important question-at what stage do you become a warlord? How many wars do you have to wage to warrant that title? Must you win all the wars you wage? Do people grow up wanting to be a warload but end up being an armour polisher instead? Answers on a postcard to Stop Asking Stupid Questions, ... read more
