We were on a boat for 10 hours to the first island Amami. When we got off the boat at 5am we noticed a few people from Switzerland. Their plan was to head to the airport and rent a car, we decided to follow. Once at the airport we hitched a ride in their car and headed to the closest beach. When we got there we were greeted with a sign that said "beware of the many poisonus snakes near by", eek! Once down at the beach we very quickly realised we were going to be the only ones on the beach. We hung out for a while and then decided to hit up another beach. Again the same thing we were the only 4 on the beach, and then just when we were about to ... read more

From Beppu we took an early train to Mt. Aso to stay at Aso Base Backpackers hostel. The people who run this hostel were very helpful and gave us a map of the volcano area and recommended treks to take for the day. We took the local bus to Mt. Aso and road a rail car up to the middle point of the crater. There was a tourist area that many people were at taking pictures, and we decided to take the hikes to get up higher and further away from the people. The Naka Dake point was our destination. It started out as a very easy hike up pre-made stairs and then got a bit steeper, and then became more like rock climbing. At one point we steered off the path and were climbing up ... read more

Beppu is famous for its natural hot springs (onsen) and here we fully indulged in the Japanese tradition. One of the highlights of our trip here was discovering the rotenburos, which are outdoor volcanic springs in the Myouban Onsen area. Beppu has a famous old onsen called Takagawara which was the hotest we experienced. Next we took a day trip to Mount Aso, one of the largest calderas in the world, which is made up of five peaks. We went to Mount Naka an acitve crater and the pictures tell the story. Our plan after Beppu was to travel to the tropical island of Yakushima. On our arrival in Kagoshima at the tip of Kyushu we stayed in the excellent Nakzona Ryokan whose helpful owner Shinichi informed us of an impending typhoon. As the weather worsened ... read more

Ages and ages ago....actually it was less than 2 months ago, but it feels like longer! I went to Kyuushu. Kyushu is one of the 5 main islands and the furthest southern. (excluding Okinawa) Yoshimi had a few days off in a row, a rarity, so she asked me to accompany her on some trip. She didn't know where she wanted to go and overseas was too far with our time schedule so we had to think about where to go in Japan. We both wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been, so I suggested Kyuushu. I got there a night earlier so I explored the city a bit on my own. I settled in to my hotel and wandered off in search of dinner. I stopped at a yaki niku restaurant. The yaki niku was ... read more

Waking up to another beautiful sunny day in Kagoshima I pondered on doing a trip to Mt. Sakurajima for some hiking. However, save for the fact of going there, there wasn't really anything to focus my interest on. There is a viewpoint where you can supposedly get a better look at the crater which spews out smoke pretty much daily, but due to security zones it didn't really sound that promising. Instead I decided to go in the opposite direction, to scale the hills west of town to take advantage of the clear skies and take some good tourist-style snaps of the city and the volcano. Then there was the fact that I still couldn't get the images from yesterday's visit to the aquarium out of my head and I knew I would have to go ... read more

Well, well... what do you know? As my imminent departure drew near, someone figured it was time to ease up on the clouds. Frustratingly so, the blue sky began to peak out again. I guess someone wanted to make sure the weather wouldn't keep my plane grounded as if to really make sure I got off the island pronto. Naha's immediate proximity to the airport meant that I could just casually check out and walk a few hundred meters to the nearest monorail station, and then find myself at the airport concourse some fifteen minutes later. The whole process of leaving my room and securing a boarding pass didn't even take 30 minutes. Quite impressive. Domestic flights in Japan generally seem to board around fifteen minutes before departure, so with more than an hour to spare ... read more

My time in Okinawa has come to an end and unfortunately I am writing this to you from Beppu, not that Beppu isn't a nice place but it's no Okinawa. I had a really really good time there. The people were friendly and so laid-back, the weather was fantastic and the beaches and scenery were to die for! There was nothing I didn't like. OK, maybe the boat trip you have to take to get there, that was sure interesting, but a lasting memory! Oh, and the occasional typhoon. It looks like I picked the right time to go and leave Okinawa, like I said in my last entry there was a typhoon heading for Miyakojima the day after I left and I watched bits of it on the news, it looked pretty bad, heaps and ... read more
